My Mom Confession-I Hate Halloween!

There, I said it! I am not one of those moms who obsesses for months over the perfect costume. I don’t look forward to going out trick or treating with my kids. It is not that I don’t enjoy being with my kids, it is just that there is so much I would rather be doing with them. In fact, it is their happiness that keeps me doing it. It is nothing religious or anything like that. As a kid it was fun, but it was not over the top fun. When we were done trick or treating, I was glad it was over and actually liked answering the door for the kids and handing out candy better.

halloween-party-tips

The weather in upstate New York is so unpredictable. I can remember so many Halloweens where my kids had to go trick or treating in winter coats. You could not even see their costumes. It would be raw and bitter cold and you would go to as many houses as you could before your ears froze off. Of course our neighbors are few and far between as we live in a rural area so that means driving and with little kids that means buckling them in and out of car seats every 2 minutes. Car seats with costumes is not fun, car seats with costumes and winter coats is excruciatingly not fun.frost

On the years when the weather is nice, it is tolerable once we arrive at a quaint neighborhood in town. There we can park and walk from house to house. We meet up with friends and it is enjoyable, for a while.

Once the chill creeps in and the kids start comparing who got what and bickering over the fact, that one got a Snickers and one got a Kit Kat at the last house.  Soon after that I will make the announcement that we are going to the last 2 houses and calling it a night. Sometime they moan that they want to do more even though their buckets are overflowing with candy and sometimes they are just as glad to be done. As soon as we get to the car, you can see their exhaustion and they are happy to be headed home.

halloween-safety-2

The worst part is when Halloween falls on a weekday. Of course, this year, it is not only on a weekday but that weekday is Monday! It is getting dark earlier, the kids don’t get off the school bus until 4:10 pm. If we are lucky their teachers will not assign the usual mountain of homework. It will still be an immediate rush to get them dressed and in the car to head out to a Trunk or Treat in town and then to that little neighborhood and hit our neighbors who want so much to see the kids and always have special things for them.

After that it will be a rush home, fighting about who got what and why can’t they eat any more candy. Then it will be showers and bedtime. After that, I will be so grateful we survived and we don’t have to think about this for another year! Oh wait, where was dinner? Where does dinner fit in here? See what I mean? It is crazy! Does any parent really enjoy this?

wheres-dinner

Let me not forget to mention, Halloween comes on the heels of a jam-packed weekend of a Halloween Parade we all marched in down to the youth center where there were games, cider, donuts and more. On Sunday, the last soccer game of the season was on despite the torrential rain and chilly weather. Everyone was drenched, freezing and wanting to get home and warm. We all had to wait until the awards and the party was finished.

So there is my big confession, I don’t like Halloween! There would be no argument from me if it was cancelled. If it cannot be cancelled, I wish we could all agree to celebrate it on the last Saturday of October, so no one needs to juggle all this on a school night.

Oh, one more thing, I am not a huge fan of birthday parties either.

How To Relieve Cold and Flu Symptoms

Tis the season for colds and flu. My poor little guys were hit hard with a marathon fever virus that was going around. They literally had fever for over a week and they were not alone. Our pediatrician said it is hitting the area hard. It then turned into strep throat and our youngest missed many days of school leading up to Christmas vacation. They are still not 100% but there are some things we are doing to keep them more comfortable.

One of the things that can make already sore throats feel worse is breathing dry, stuffy air. A cool mist humidifier and make the air much more comfortable. I love this one from Safety 1st, the Ultrasonic 360° Humidifier helps to ease cold symptoms and reduce dry skin and itchy eyes.

Safety 1st humidifier

Some features that make this my go-to humidifier are that it has 2 fully rotating mist outlets which let me control the direction of the mist and is perfect if you have 2 children who share a room. The other thing I am stoked about is that it requires no filters, so no expensive filters to replace!

It operates very quietly so it works well in the bedroom without making noise that might be frightening or keep children awake. It has a super large tan so you do not have to fill it up as much as one tank lasts about 36 hours. When it is time to refill the unit it will shut off automatically and light up to let me know.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children get an average of 8 to 10 colds every year. In the U.S., the flu is most common between October and May, and peaks in January, February, and March. Parents everywhere should be ready to tackle this season.

If you are looking for other ways to help ease your baby or child’s discomfort when they are sick, Safety 1st has many products besides the humidifier above to help you do that. Check out their extensive selection of thermometers, nasal aspirators, medicine spoons/dispensers and more.

What are some ways you keep your child comfortable when sick. Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear your suggestions. Stay healthy!

I was provided with the above product for free to facilitate my post. As always my words and views are 100% my own.

Eco Vessel, Insulated Steel Bottles Review & Giveaway!!! #HolidayGiftGuide

eco-vessel-logo

We use water bottles all the time.  I want my kids to use high quality bottles that are free of any toxins and are easy to care for.  The Eco Vessel Twist is a triple insulated kids stainless steel water bottle with fun designs and colors.  It is a large enough bottle that it is good for younger kids, older kids and even adults would look fine using.  It holds a full 12 ounces of water.

Features I love are that it has a leak-proof twist cap, and it fits car cup holders, the bottles are great to pack because the triple max insulation keeps drinks cold for up to 36 hours and hot for 8 hours.  This is essential when we go on trips because I can pack drinks and not have to keep pulling off to go to a convenience store because they want a cold or hot drink. They make getting where we are going a more pleasant experience and of course we make better time.

The full bottle designs are fun and add a lot of style to the bottle.  This is a great water bottle that is perfect anywhere they go.  There is even a removable tea strainer

TheraPearl Hot & Cold Therapy Packs Review and Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

TheraPearl® hot & cold therapy packs are doctor designed to provide extraordinary relief from everyday aches and pains including inflammation, bruising, joint/muscle soreness and so much more! Pearls conform to the body while holding their healing temperatures for the doctor-recommended time (15-20 minutes) for optimal theraputic benefit. Freeze or microwave. Non-toxic and reusable. Latex, lead and BPA-free.

I was recently sent a few TheraPearl products for review.  I have to tell you these packs were kind of addictive to just rolling through your hands, right out of the package.  I received a Sports Pack, TheraPearl Pals Pig and Frog.  These packs can be heated in the microwave for hot pain relief or frozen.  I froze our packs, and it was not long before one of our little ones had a boo boo.  This cheery little pal brought a smile to my child’s face just upon seeing it.  Then, the cool pack provided great relief of his pain.  My kids liked these pals so much that on a hot day they would take one out of the freezer and just lie down with it.  They have been well used and still going strong.  Not long before sitting down to write this review, my son came in with the Frog Pal explaing he had hurt his finger.  TheraPearl has a great variety of sizes and shapes.  I would really like to try the eye mask.

Classic Lunch & Go™ Heated Lunch Tote Review & Coupon Code For My Blog Readers.

I was very excited to be chosen to review the Classic Lunch & Go Heated Lunch Tote (www.warmandtote.com).  This versatile tote can be used hot or cold.  I like the fact that it allows me to keep food warm while we are traveling.  I am able to keep a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches warm for the kids even if they want to eat them 3 hours after we hit the road.  With 2 toddlers this is really great, plus if you are on the road for a trip you can keep food warm from a lunch stop and they can eat it later.  It is also great for keeping food cold so no matter the menu, you can keep lunch fresh.  Another thing I love is the adjustable strap it easily can be slung over my shoulder and feels secure, leaving my hands free for the multitude of other things I need to carry.  The 10″ by 8″ roomy soft sided bag allows me to pack a variety of foods very easily.  Keep a hot hero hot and a cold sub cold.

This tote is great to pack a childs lunch in school.  They can have a hot healthy lunch from home that will be nice and warm hours later.  This allows us to make healthy food that our kids will eat.  The tote comes with 1 reusable turbo heat pack that lasts for 5 hours hot and 8-10 hours cold.  The heat pack is heated in the microwave or cooled in the freezer.

Take a look at their website-www.warmandtote.com- to see the variety of great products they carry like:

Fun in the snow!!!

Saturday we bundled the little ones up and let them go out in the snow.    Luke was so happy the whole time as you can see in his pictures and Ethan was eating and excavating the snow.  We are due to have a much bigger snowstorm tomorrow that could bring as much as 18″ so they should have a lot of fun.    Jimi and I and the little ones went on a much-needed trip to Sams and Wegman’s last Thursday night in prep for the storm.  We stocked up on essentials and groceries and really have been enjoying being home together-all seven of us.

Alexandra is going to start volunteering with Aileen Gunther from the NYS Assembly.  She is quite excited about doing that 2 days a week.   Well, just a short update and some pics.  Hope you all have a wonderful week and stay warm and drive safe if you are in the path of the storm.  God Bless.

Fall is coming!!!

In a few short days and the days are getting shorter, it will officially be Fall.  When people tell me that Fall is their favorite season and talk about apple and pumpking picking, I always look a bit skeptical.  See, I would like Fall too…if we had a Fall.  Unfortunately in these lovely Catskill Mountains we don’t really have a fall and we move very rapidly from Summer right into Winter.  This makes for a very long Winter and maybe if we are very lucky we will have a whole 2 weeks of Fall and most times those are not consecutive days.  I remember the “Fall” soccer games of my older kids where the kids were playing with winter coats and it was snowing.  These are not the pictures of Fall that I think of, this is not the image of October that most people have in their heads.  So I do feel a bit melancholy at the ending of Summer which is my favorite time of year.  Yes, there are things that I do like about Fall but for me it is a bit depressing and is leading up to Winter and we have harsh Winters here and you can only build so many snowmen.  I am going to try to embrace Fall this year and hope we truly have one, even though the other day the temperature fell way down and w have had to put the heat on.  I also hate to see the garden die and all the trees lose their leaves as there is something so lonely about Winter.  I mean yes, the first snow is beautiful but driving and trying to get around in it really well…sucks.   So prayers for a long mild Fall for all.  Happy Harvesting!!!
