6 Fun Ways To Celebrate Earth Day With Your Family

Earth Day is Saturday! Do you have any special plans to celebrate our planet with your family? If you don’t, I have some great ideas to share. Earth Day is a special day to stress the importance of giving back to the planet we live on. Teach your children to respect and nurture the Earth and you will be making a difference not only in the next generation but our planet as well.

Go on a Litter Walk

Grab some trash bags and gloves and set off around your neighborhood cleaning up the trash that is around. Explain to your kids how littering like this is dangerous to wildlife. As you pass your neighbors encourage them to join in. Before you know it, you will have a parade of trash pickers and as they say; many hands makes the load lighter.

Plant a Garden

Nothing shows your kids where their food comes from better than planting a garden. From seeds or seedlings, they will see the entire process. Let them help with tending and caring for the garden all season. By the time of your last harvest, you will have some very experienced gardeners.

If if is too cold yet to plant by you, plan out your garden with your kids. You can start getting your garden ready by cleaning up last years plant remains, leaves, sticks and other debris. Then break up the soil. You should pick a soil test kit up and test your soil to see what nutrients it is lacking. The better your soil, the better your garden.

If you don’t have land to plant a garden, plant some container gardens or vertical gardens. There are some great ideas for maximizing your space on sites like Pinterest, so check it out.

Plant a Tree

This is a lot of fun, take a ride down to your local nursery and pick out a tree or shrub. Then go home and plant it together. Again, enlist your children to take part in the planting and care of the tree. Explain how the plants and trees give us something we need to live…oxygen.

Start a Habitat Garden

Did you know that our population of pollinators is dwindling? It is, and our food supply depends on bees and butterflies to thrive. Do your part by researching the types of plants you need to create a habitat garden.

The Monarchs main food source in the Milkweed plant but along with that you can plant native grasses, butterfly bushes, bee balm and so much more. There are also butterfly houses and feeders as well as bee houses you can add to help our pollinators. We visited a butterfly house last year with our kids and learned so much.

Start Composting

Do you compost? If not you should. It will not only cut down on your organic household garbage, it will enrich the soil in your garden. It is not hard and you have a lot of options.

There are countertop compost bins you can use to collect your daily vegetable peels, banana skins, egg shells, coffee grounds etc. Then you can take them out to a compost bin or drum. They have nice units you can buy that make it super easy or your can put up some wire fencing and make a bin of your own. You can read more about the process HERE.

Go For a Family Hike:

See the beauty of our planet by taking a family hike. It is good exercise for the body, mind and soul. Pack along a picnic lunch and make a day of it. There are resources for your state where you can find recommendations for great trails. Go somewhere new, you might be surprised at the beauty you find and did not know existed in your state.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day?

Stop Posting “FML” Statuses!!!

It's just a bad day not a bad lifeNothing gets under my skin more than “FML” statuses that people post.  In fact I hate them so much, that as I go through my Facebook Feed and just quickly read them, I have to stop and say a prayer that lets God know I was just reading that and didn’t say that myself about my life.

I know to most of you that probably sounds crazy or silly, but it’s the truth.  The biggest reason I despise it is that it’s often said about very trivial things.  You know like asking for no mayo on your burger and getting one with mayo.  Sometimes it could be something more, say your car skidding on ice even though you did not hit anyone else or receive any injuries. That should not have a “FML” status but a “Thank God” or “Life is Good” status.

There are so many people struggling just to live, those with life-threatening illnesses, who are in pain and still fighting with every ounce of strength left to make it another day.  They are not posting “FML” statuses, they know how precious” life is and they are thankful for every minute.  To post a status that you missed the bus or were late to work with “FML” is just crapping on your life. Maybe it was destiny that you missed that bus, perhaps getting on that bus would have led to something very bad for you.  I believe every thing happens for a reason so if you didn’t catch the bus, try to look at it in a different way. Value your life no matter how hard it may seem at times. Never think it’s not worth it, because you need to remember there are people all over, who would trade places with you in a heartbeat.  Parents who have to stand by helplessly while their child takes their last breath, moms who have to say goodbye to their families way before their time, dads who will never get to show their son how to shave.

Life is precious, life is fragile, life is fleeting, please don’t put such little value on yours.  Cherish your life instead.  I am not saying you can’t post about having a bad day or something bad happening.  Of course you can share that and get some encouragement and hugs from friends.  It’s just the “FML” that you need to lose.  In the words of Max Ehrmann, “With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend And Kick Off Cookie Season!!! #CookieBoss

As a blogger in the  Mom It Forward Blogger Network I was compensated  by GSUSA for my participation in this promotion.  As always my views, words, and opinions are 100% my own.

National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend #CookieBoss

Do you know what season it is?  Maybe you are thinking about football and the upcoming Superbowl but that’s not what I’m thinking of. Are you ready for some COOKIES?!!!  That’s right, Cookie Season is almost here! Girl Scout Cookie Season, and In New York City the Girls Scouts of the USA will celebrate the start of the season by taking over Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal on Friday, February 7th, from 8 am to 7 pm to give the big apple residents their first taste of this year’s cookies.  Are you ready to celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend?

Girl Scout Cookies

The Girl Scouts is the world’s largest girl-led business, the near $800 million dollar cookie program was created to teach girls five essential life skills: goal setting, decision-making, money management, business ethics and people skills.  I remember fondly my time as a girl scout, the weekly meetings, crafts, earning badges, learning new skills, bonding with peers, trips and of course the cookie sale.  I loved the colorful order forms and seeing them fill up with orders, picking up all the boxes and delivering them with my mom and sister.

#CookieBoss

When I had my own daughter there was no doubt she would also participate in Girl Scouts. This time I was her troop leader, allowing me to  see and experience Girl Scouts from the other side.  I loved being a troop leader and there was so much support, we had local meetings, worked close with council, went to some tremendous, enriching leader trainings and had the chance to work with some amazing young girls along the way.  It was a wonderful experience even as an adult.

Perfect For Me!!!

Perfect For Me!!!

I will never forget the excitement of the cookie sales, how my dining room became Cookie Central for pick up and how we organized special sales with the girls to sell the extra boxes.  Setting up  the events to sell the extra cookies really helped the girls with their planning, business skills and time management.

cookie car magnet #CookieBoss

We held brainstorming sessions about the best venue with the most traffic, what we would need, dividing up the tasks, coming together the day of the event to set up, do business and learn important skills that would be a foundation for the rest of their lives.  How to deal with people, totaling up orders, giving change, preparing for the unexpected and doing it all with a smile are what the girls would remember at the end of the day along with the laughs and fun we had.  The memories I carry as both a Girl Scout and then a Girl Scout Leader are a gift and the whole experience has enriched my life in so many ways.

Connect with GSUSA on their Website, check out their Cookie Program Page. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.  The Girl Scouts of Western NY are also on Facebook and Twitter so stop by and say hi!

Celebrate Halloween With Hershey’s Candy!!! #HersheysHalloween

Celebrate With Hershey's #HersheysHalloween

We’re a family of chocolate lovers and Hershey’s is the go-to candy choice in our home.  My little guys think there’s no better treat than a simple Hershey’s kiss.  They work so well for bribery, lol.  Who can resist , Kit Kat, Rolo, York Peppermint Patties, and of course the classic Hershey Bar, such an important component to the tasty S’mores we make at our fire pit.  I grew up with these candies and we are true Hershey fans. One of our favorite places is Hershey Park-The Sweetest Place on Earth.  It’s only a few hours from our home and many family vacations have been spent there.  Our Christmas tree is filled with treasured ornaments we brought home from our trips and include a replica of the Hershey kiss street lights adorned with their festive garland, the Hershey Park Carousel, a family of bears holding a huge Hershey’s Bar, a silver plated Hershey’s Kiss type of cage that can hold and trap delicious Hershey Kisses for holiday snacking and many more.

Hershey's Halloween Candy #HersheysHalloween

Halloween is a perfect time to have delectable Hershey’s chocolates on hand.  Have you see the new unwrapped Reese’s minis they are absolutely adorable and delicious.  Another of our favorites are  the pumpkin shaped York Peppermint Patties. The Kit Kat bar is sporting festive orange coating, Reese’s, Rolos and Kisses are wrapped in the colors of autumn and you need to check out the new Halloween Scream Eggs!

The Celebrate With Hershey’s website has great ideas for parties, crafts, recipes, costumes, videos and loads of other fun stuff to explore.  A great recipe we tried was the Hershey’s Kisses Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies (recipe below), they were a huge hit and my sweet four-year old came in and said, “Mommy what are you making for us?”  He was thrilled to see a cookie with his favorite candy all unwrapped and sitting with pride in the middle of a delectable peanut butter nest.  They are absolutely a family favorite we have made for years in our home.  There is a similar recipe for one using the Pumpkin Spice Kiss Here.

Random House, Celebrate The Civil Rights Movement Blog Tour & Book Giveaway!!!

Random_House_logo
We are so thrilled to have been asked by Random House to participate in a blog tour to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have A Dream Speech  that he made August 28, 1963.

I-HAVE-A-DREAM_new-cover-with-CSK-seal

From Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s daughter, Dr. Bernice A. King: “My father’s dream continues to live on from generation to generation, and this beautiful and powerful illustrated edition of his world-changing “I Have a Dream” speech brings his inspiring message of freedom, equality, and peace to the youngest among us—those who will one day carry his dream forward for everyone.”

On August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, Martin Luther King gave one of the most powerful and memorable speeches in our nation’s history. His words, paired with Caldecott Honor winner Kadir Nelson’s magnificent paintings, make for a picture book certain to be treasured by children and adults alike. The themes of equality and freedom for all are not only relevant today, 50 years later, but also provide young readers with an important introduction to our nation’s past.

This book is such a brilliant way for myself and other parents and educators to teach our children about Martin Luther King Jr. and share with them this moving speech that resonates today as much as it did then.  The gorgeous illustrations make this book a true treasure that captures this rich part of our country’s history. There are some great booknotes available to spur group discussion that can be viewed and downloaded HERE.

Random House is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own copy of I Have A Dream.  Thank you Random House for the review book and selecting us to take part in this poignant blog tour!!!  Open to US residents.
