Help Kids To Stay Safe Through Play #DumbWaysJR

I think as parents one of the most important things we want to do as parents is keep our kids safe. We want them to understand how to be safe and not to be careless especially around things that can hurt them. Teaching them the importance of safety in the kitchen and around trains is very important.

So many needless accidents occur around trains, train stations, platforms and crossings. In 2012 a very popular PSA campaign Dumb Ways to Die effectively communicated the message that it is dumb to take risks that have serious consequences, especially around trains. While the message is very effective in educating people about the risks, the graphics are a bit too graphic and gory for younger children.

dumb ways jr logo

I was thrilled to be able to try out two Dumb Ways JR Apps to help younger children learn through play how to be safe. Dumb Ways JR Boffo’s Breakfast and Dumb Ways JR Loopy’s Train Set are available for download for iOS at the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

Dumb Ways Jr. Boffo’s Breakfast

boffo breakfast log

Dumb Ways Jr. Boffo’s Breakfast helps even young children who can’t read have fun while learning. They can create so many combinations and recipes for a very hungry Boffo to eat. There is a cutting board where they can choose whatever ingredients they want. Then they can cut them, dice them or grate them. They can feed him the foods one at a time without cutting or cooking them and they get a kick out of seeing his reaction to certain foods. Sometimes he burps, holds his stomach, passes gas, gets the hiccups and more. He falls asleep if children are not interacting with the app.

dumb ways jr app

There are no limits to the amount of ingredients they can use, they can feed him one thing or a combo of several things. After they have the ingredients they can use the mixer and then cook it up for Boffo. He will then eat what they made and show his reaction to it. When they are using the stove, if they turn it up to 4 or 5 (the highest settings) Boffo gets nervous and it serves as a springboard for discussion as to why. The flames on the stove also increase when the child turns up the stove.

There is a parents guide that comes with the app to explain how parents can assist their child in learning key concepts while having fun. Dumb Ways JR Boffo’s Breakfast app can be downloaded for iOS at the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

Dumb Ways JR Loopy’s Train Set:

loopy's train set logo

In Loopy’s Train Set, players can select from two modes of play: Drive or Build. In Drive mode there are 3 levels and kids use controls on the screen to drive Loopy’s train on the track. They do not have to steer the train but they can choose from forward and reverse and 4 different speeds- stop, 1, 2, or 3.

There are waiting passengers at the train station and kids need to stop the train and pick them up. They assist passengers on and off the train. The app design encourages kids to create their own dialogue when helping passengers board or exit the train. The first level has a basic track but in level 2 the track is larger and has a tunnel, more track direction options and more train stations. Level 3 has all that and more, there are bridges, railroad crossings, more track and options to keep the app fresh and exciting.

dumb ways jr 2

dumb ways jr

In Build mode, the children are the designers. They create their own unique track by arranging and connecting different-shaped pieces of track. They can also add  houses, trees and animals to their scene to really customize it. After the track is built they can drive Loopy’s train on it. There are 3 levels starting with the simplest and as the levels go up so do the choices of track and other options that kids can choose to add to their track. The ability to build their own track keeps it fresh and fun because they can build something different each time! Dumb Ways Jr 3

Through this fun app kids can learn about various aspects of train safety. They will come to understand that characters cannot cross the tracks and the boom gates at the level crossings automatically come down when the train approaches. This provides the opportunity for parents and caregivers to expand on these concepts to talk about being safe around trains in a productive way. There is also a parents guide that gives parents tips on how they can get the most out of the app for their child.

You can download Dumb Ways JR Loopy’s Train Set for iOS in the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

My kids really had fun with these apps. Of course being kids they took great pleasure in seeing Boffo have certain reactions to the food they gave him. They really loved the option they had to create their own train route in Dumb Ways JR Loopy’s Train Set. Since my kids have an older sister who works as an analyst for a major transit organization it really opened the dialogue about train safety even more!

The apps appeal to a range of senses so they really work with whatever type of learning kids like. The apps encourage kids to problem solve and role play which gets them really thinking. These are definitely favorite apps for them and I feel good there is that learning intertwined throughout.

Should Parents Be Worried About Nano-Partcles in Baby Formula? #NanoBabyFormula

Maybe you are of the thinking that a little bit of anything can’t hurt us. Do you think something so tiny, like the size of  a nano-particle could not hurt us? You might be thinking that there is no way some tiny little nano-particle is going to be able to cause any significant damage. Well, if that is what you are thinking, you may be very alarmed and shocked at what I am about to let you know.

Something called nanotechnology is being used to engineer particles that are 1000 times thinner than a stand of human hair! These nano-materials are several hundred times smaller than our blood cells. The concern about nanotechnology is that it can cause familiar substances to change in ways that scientist don’t expect and cannot predict.

An example of this would be to look at the thick, white, zinc sunscreen that many people wear on their nose during a day at the beach. If nanotechnology is used to reduce the size of those particles to the nano-scale it will cause those white zinc particles to become transparent. This can be useful, but the problem is that at this tiny scale, the particles change in other ways as well.

Research has shown us that  zinc nano-particles are much more toxic than the larger zinc particles and unfortunately that is the case with most nano-particles. The sheer uncertainty in how this technology changes the products means we need to have new safety testing in place before nanotechnology is used in manufacturing products.

Who is the most vulnerable?

Infants may be at greater risk due to their more vulnerable physiology. Since the immune, central nervous, reproductive and digestive systems in children are still developing in infancy and early stages of life, consuming  products with nano-particles can lead to irreversible damage and increase their risk of disease later in life. Obviously baby formula containing nano-particles would be of great concern.

nano ingredients in baby formula

Baby formulas do not list nano-particle ingredients on the label. Friends of the Earth is also concerned that FDA does not regulate nano-particles in baby formula, nor does the agency pre-screen or test infant formulas before they enter the market. They believe the agency can do more to protect this vulnerable population.

Friends of the Earth commissioned laboratory analysis of popular baby formulas to find out if they contain nano-particles. They tested leading US brands of baby formula, including: Gerber (owned by Nestle), Enfamil, Similac, and Well Beginnings (Walgreen’s brand).

Results showed all six baby formulas they tested contain nano-particles. The three types found are “needle-like” nano hydroxyapatite, nano TiO2 (titanium dioxide) and nano silica dioxide.

FOEformula-600x1500

Friends of the Earth is especially concerned about the nano hydroxyapatite in needle form found in the Gerber, Enfamil, and Well Beginnings formulas. The European Union Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) found that needle nano-hydroxyapatite is potentially toxic, could be absorbed by and enter cells, and should not be used in cosmetics such as toothpaste, teeth whiteners and mouth washes. A material that should not be used in cosmetics raises greater concern when used in food especially baby formula!

Download the full report and press release HERE.

What New Risks Can Nano-Particles Cause:

● They can be more chemically reactive and more bioactive than larger particles of the same chemicals.

● Due to their very small size, nano-particles have been demonstrated to be more likely than larger particles to enter cells, tissues and organs.

● Greater bioavailability and greater bioactivity may introduce new toxicity risks.

Why are companies using these nano-particles in baby formula?

Nano HA is most likely a calcium source for the formula, or could be used as an abrasive, bulking and emulsion stabilizer. However the needle-form is more commonly used in oral and bone surgeries. TiO2 is a brightener or whitener for food and beverage products, anti-caking agent Nano silica dioxide is used as a ‘trickle and flow’ aid in powdered food products, as a clearing agent in beer and wine, as a food additive (amorphous silica found to be nano) and as a food coating

Are nano-particles used in other kinds of products?

Many nano-materials have already entered wide-scale commercial use and can be found in hundreds of products, including transparent sunscreens; light-diffracting cosmetics; penetration enhanced moisturizers; stain-, moisture- and odor-repellent fabrics; long-lasting paints and furniture varnishes; antibacterial household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, refrigerators and air conditioners; and sporting equipment.

Beyond baby formulas, children’s products that contain engineered nano-particles include skincare products and sunscreens, supplements, food containers, pacifiers, teethers, blankets, toys and stuffed animals, baby bottles, toothbrushes, baby carriages, bibs, baby clothing and many other products.

What can consumers do?

Until government and companies regulate nanotechnology in a responsible and transparent manner, there are steps we can take to protect our health.

● Breastfeed when and if possible

● Hold government and industry accountable: Join Friends of the Earth to demand a moratorium on the use of nanotechnology in the food sector and urge policy makers to regulate and label food, food packaging and agricultural products containing manufactured nano-materials

● Contact baby formula manufacturers and ask them to remove nano-materials from their products

Sign The Petition:

There is so much more to nanotechnology and the potential outcome it can have. If you would like to learn more and find out how you can help FOE’s efforts to create a safe, just, resilient and sustainable food system click HERE.  You can also Sign This Petition telling baby formula companies to remove risky nano-particles from their products.

Now You Can Have The Features & Performance You Need In A Mini PC!

Remember how big computers were when they first came out?  Even when most of us started getting home computers, they truly were desktops that took up our whole desktop. Then there were towers that were considered space-saving but still huge. We know the drill as technology advances, those huge devices get smaller and smaller.

I recently had the chance to review a Quantum Byte, Logitech® Keyboard & HD Webcam Bundle by Azulle. Compact is definitely what this is, but the small footprint does not mean it is small on features. The Quantum Byte Mini Windows Fanless PC is so easy to hook up to a monitor or your TV with an HDMI cable. We hooked ours up to our smart TV and it was running in no time.

Azulle Bundle

Mini PC Features:  Intel Atom (Quad-core) processor Z3735F, 2GB of DDR3L RAM, and 32GB of on-board memory, Windows® 10 OS, Ethernet port, 3X Powered USB 2.0 Ports, VGA Port, 3.5 mm earphone Port
Microphone Support

The bundle we tested included the Logitech K400 Plus Wireless Keyboard with Touch-pad and  the  Logitech HD Pro C920 camera webcam. I was really impressed with everything. You can see my video review below and on YouTube to get an in-depth look at it all.

Let me know what you think in the comments and if you are considering purchasing one of these for your home. You can purchase this product right on Amazon at the link below. You can also stay in the loop with Azulle by checking out their website  and following them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube.

Spoil Your Cat With This Easy To Make Cat Bed #yougottabekittenme

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #yougottabekittenme #CollectiveBias

cat bed hero new

I love DIY projects, I really like the challenge and the end results. Well, usually I love the end results, we all have the fails along the way. Speaking of fails, have you ever used a cat litter that just did not do the job? That is super embarrassing.  I found the solution easily strolling the pet aisle at my local Sam’s Club. I recently purchased Fresh Step Total Control with the power of Febreze clumping cat litter.

fresh step in store collage

This product is phenomenal for really tackling ammonia odor because it has Borate Technology which also works to stop the growth of odor-causing bacteria. The lemongrass citrus scent has a fresher aroma than any cat litter we have used in the past.

I was glad to see it was available in a 42lb bag that is so easy to carry and it’s resealable. This litter is featured in the May Instant Savings Book and Sam’s Club Members get $3.50 off from 5/22 thru 6/5. The offer is already loaded onto member’s cards and offered in the Instant Savings Book.

Max even seems to appreciate the change to Fresh Step Total Control with the power of Febreze litter and we always love to show our appreciation for Max. Max is a loyal and true feline member of our family. Even though Max is an adult cat, he is still as playful as a kitten. I know that having fun toys and places to hide and sleep are fun for Max.

We got a great idea to make him a cozy little tent type bed and hideout. It was really easy and I wanted to share for our readers who may want to replicate this project for their own feline family members.

The cozy cat bed is very easy to make. You start with a base of 15” by 15”. You can use a thick corrugated cardboard or other similar material. You need to be able to make 4 holes in the corners, so keep that in mind when choosing your base.

For this project you will need:

#yougottabekittenme

Get your  15″ x 15″ corrugated cardboard base. You can glue two pieces of cardboard together for extra strength for your base. Then cover with the vinyl adhesive. It does not need to be perfect as you are not going to see this and it will be covered.

cat bed base

You need to take the wire hangers and untwist the top. The trim the wire so you have two equal size pieces. You will shape each piece to form an arch. Then you will poke each end in a corner of the base and allow a half inch to poke through. You  then take your pliers and bend that and then tape it flat against the under side of the base. Repeat with the other 3 corners.

cat bed wire

cat bed corner hole

cat bed underside tape

Where the wire pieces intersect on the top you want to place some duct tape around that to hold it together.

cat bed frame

Once all that is secure, take your t-shirt and with the open end place it over the structure so that the opening for he head is situated in the lower center of the front to create the entrance.

cat bed t shirt

cat bed t shirt over

You then use the safety pins to secure the sleeves and bottom of the shirt to the bottom of the cat bed. This will give it a tidy, finished appearance.

cat bed pins

Last but not least add a nice cozy blanket or thick towel for kitty’s comfort.

cat bed done

cat bed max

The nice thing is you can take the t-shirt off to wash or to switch it out if it becomes worn or you want a new look. Max just loves his new cozy hang out.

Max has it pretty good but we know a lot of cats don’t and that is due to overpopulation. That is why we donated $100 to The Animal Rights Alliance Inc., T.A.R.A.  They are a not-for-profit organization providing low cost spay and neuter services. They serve Sullivan, Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties in NY state. T.A.R.A  is able to help animals only through generous contributions. Their fees do not cover the cost for our program services. They rely on grants and public donations to subsidize the amount needed in order to make spaying and neutering affordable to everyone. If you would like to learn more about T.A.R.A. you can visit their website HERE.

Max is having a blast with his new bed. I hope you will let me know what you think of this easy way to spoil your four-legged family member and if you are using or plan to try Fresh Step Total Control with the power of Febreze litter. Please let me know in the comments.

With LTB you pay a low monthly fee and you will receive a box jam-packed with new lures and baits on the 10th of every month. Shipping is free throughout the United states and you are not roped into a contract, so you can cancel at any time.

If you want to have the same products at the end of your line that professional anglers are using to catch the big fish, you will want to try a Lucky Tackle Box subscription box. If you don’t, you might be telling fish tales about the one that got away.

Unlike other fishing subscription box services that send samples in their boxes, Lucky Tackle Box sends subscribers full size products that give them the biggest bang for their buck. I recently had a chance to sample a Bass Fishing subscription box for largemouth and smallmouth bass.

It arrived in a timely manner and was full of all kinds of lures and baits perfect for anyone fishing for largemouth or smallmouth bass. I liked that the box contained full sized products all picked specifically for bass fishing. We live on a lake filled with bass so it was nice to give this to my older sons who were very impressed with the products.

You can choose a box based on whatever type of fish you are fishing for. I like that there is a variety to choose from. I think this subscription service that is suited to anglers of all experience makes a great gift idea. Sometimes it is hard to buy for a man in your life but if they like fishing, they would find that Lucky Tackle Box is a definite “Keeper.”

Spice It Up In December With The 12 Days of Passion

Disclosure: This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #KYTrySomethingNew #CollectiveBias

ky passion 12days

As we head straight into the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” it can often feel like the most stressful time of the year. Most of us already lead incredibly busy lives so throwing the holidays and all the expectations they bring on our already overflowing plate can seem like a recipe for disaster. I think stress is something most would say definitely rises during the holiday season.

The holidays seem to exacerbate so many issues for couples like family tensions, finances, and not having time together. This can all lead to arguments and hurt feelings. I think it is best to get an action plan and go on the offense before we make the most wonderful time of the year feel like the most horrible time of the year.

Couples tend to put their relationships on the back burner this time of year. It is so important to remember that you and your partner need to make time for each other. You might think that while that sounds nice it’s just not possible when you have so much to do.  You can barely get through each day as it is and you only sleep 4-5 hours.

Well, time to make a plan. Everyone has the same 24 hours. Your relationship matters and fighting and arguing can zap your energy. So make some small changes and see how you feel.  Commit to 12 days of passion with your partner this holiday season.

Sit down with your partner over dinner or coffee and dessert and get out your calendars. Calendar in 12 special times for you and him alone. They don’t have to be elaborate and they don’t have to cost a lot of money either. Just get out your calendars and take a look at some of the suggestions below and you can add your own.

  1. Notes of Passion– Pick a day and agree to leave each other passionate notes throughout the day. Of course you can include texts, but mix it up. It would be fun to stick a note for him to find in his briefcase or coat pocket as well. Speak from the heart and let your partner know why you are thankful he is your soulmate. Just doing this throughout the day can brighten both your spirits and make you feel adored.

2. Unplugged Game Nightfor just the two of you- Family game nights are nice, but this is just for you and your partner. Pick a favorite game and spend the time together when the kids are in bed to play together. You can make a favorite dessert, hot cider or cocoa to serve while you play and extra points  for playing in front of a cozy fire.

ky scrabble

3. Dinner and a Movie– Always a great one, and it does not mean going out. Chances are you have a DVD you still have not had the time to watch and cooking even the simplest dinner together can be fun. Don’t make it hard, even homemade pizza with your favorite toppings works. Heck, even frozen pizza will work, it is about the two of you spending quality time together. It does not have to be expensive or mean slaving over a hot stove all day. Use fun printables and of course some movie theater candy and popcorn containers make it super fun!

ky dinnermovie

4. Couples Massage– I was in Walmart recently and I saw K-Y® TOUCH®. K-Y® TOUCH® is a product that is a 2 in 1 Massage Creme and Pleasure Gel that can be found down the Family Planning aisle. What better way to work out that stress than from a loving massage from your life partner? This cream feels like soft cashmere and creates a feeling like warm cashmere wherever you massage it into. It is touch activated and will have you slowing down together to enjoy the splendor of the feelings it evokes as you lovingly massage one another. Trust me you will not need board games after this to pass your time.

5. Couples PlaylistYou and your partner each put together 6 songs that remind you of each other, your relationship or the love you share. Then get together and listen to them. It is amazing the feelings that music can stir up.

6.How Do I Love TheeWrite down 6 things about your partner that you love and cherish and then read them aloud to each other. Too many times we don’t feel appreciated or adored. This will give you the time not to remind each other of your shortcomings as we so often do in our day to day lives but to celebrate what you love about each other.

7.Make Something Special For Each Other– Don’t worry if you are not crafty, it could be a coupon book for special things, a poem, a song if you are musically gifted, etc. Just make something from your heart and share an early gift with the one you love.

8. Take A Walk TogetherEven a short one holding hands and unplugged. Just spend some time in nature and with each other, you will be surprised how good you feel when you take the time to connect with nature and each other.

9. Sweets For Your SweetheartPick out a special dessert recipe you have never made and make it together. Taking the time to find something you both think is pure decadence and then making it together may turn out just as sweet as the end result.

ky heart cookies

10. Share A Favorite Holiday Movie TogetherPick a holiday classic you both love and watch it together. Add cocoa and cookies for extra points.

11. Help Each Other– Help your partner with one of the chores they need to do. Maybe he helps you to wrap presents or you help him paint the guest room.  Just pick something that either of you would normally do alone and help the other with it. An extra set of hands makes the load lighter and brings you together doing something that is necessary.

12. Sit Back And Just TalkMaybe in front of the tree in the quiet evening over some coffee or cocoa, take the time to just talk about what is on your mind. This is a time to connect with conversation and really communicate. You never know what you might learn or where it might lead.

Do you have any special ways that you want to share about how you keep your relationship paramount during the holiday season? If so, please share in the comments, I would love to read your ideas.
