Songs from the Baobab: African Lullabies & Nursery Rhymes Book & CD Review and Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

I really enjoy enriching my children’s lives by introducing them to different cultures and traditions.  I was recently sent a book to review that allowed me to do just that.  “Songs from the Baobab” is an enchanting book of African lullabies and nursery rhymes.  This hardcover book includes a CD that stores inside the back cover.  Representing 11 languages originating from Central and West Africa and brought to life with lavish illustrations, this collection’s rhymes and lullabies soothe babies and children to sleep as the songs travel from one country and one language to another. Lyrics are reproduced in the original language and translated into English, followed by notes on the origin and cultural context of each song. The accompanying CD features 29 songs from 10 countries—including Rwanda, the Ivory Coast, and Senegal—each one unique in language and sound, recorded with indigenous instruments and exquisitely performed by women, men, and children. This delightful, enchanting production captures the staccato rhythm of the children’s rhymes and the poetry of the language as well as a sense of the heritage and tradition of each culture.

This is a great book to share with your children.  It is an excellent book for little ones who have been adopted from the countries represented, as it helps them identify and know the cultural songs and rhymes that are native to where they were born.  This book and CD are also a great resource to use in school settings and tie in with lessons about different cultures and traditions.  If your family shares their heritage with the cultures in this book you will absolutely love reading and singing the rhymes and songs with your children.

The book features colorful illustrations by Élodie Nouhen as well as full lyrics in the original languages, translated into English. A map and explanatory notes serve to make this an enchanting educational experience for adults as well as children.

Paris-based musician and educator Chantal Grosléziat recorded these pieces with singers from each culture. Paul Mindy arranged each piece with traditional instruments, including the kora, balafon, kalimba and rain sticks. The lullabies and rhymes make frequent references to animals and the natural world. For example, the Central African Republic lullaby “Dunga” urges the newborn to “take your strength from nature.” Family relationships, and in particular the loss of a parent, are find a place in these songs from cultures where disease, famine and war are part of everyday life. A song from Mauritania tells the baby, “your mother has gone to search for jujubes,” and a piece from Guinea evokes the sad fate of orphans, saying “Sali Wonde, nothing is eternal.”

The French imprint – La Montagne Secrète – is considered to be one of the most original and innovative children’s publishing houses in Canada and France. Hickory Farms Orchard’s Bounty Gift Basket Review!!!

I was absolutely thrilled when Mom Central told me that I was selected for a special blogger review program sponsored by Hickory Farms. The name Hickory Farms conjures up so many great images for me, wonderful gift baskets, holiday gifts, great food, family and friends.  I was sent an Orchard’s Bounty Gift Basket, when the box was opened, I could not believe how beautiful it was.  Everything was packed in a large hand-woven  Peterboro Keepsake basket.  Just seeing that basket told me I was in for a treat.  I wasn’t wrong, the basket was filled with farmhouse cheddar cheese, crackers, summer sausage, crisp delicious Fuji apples, gorgeous large Red D’Anjou and Crown Comice pears and a bag of berry nut bounty.  The first thing I tried were the apples and they were so sweet, juicy and delicious that I wanted to claim them all for myself.  My 2 and 4-year-old could not wait to dive into the Mandarin oranges, my husband opened the berry nut bounty and passed it around.  The pears ripened and you could just smell how great they were going to taste before even taking a bite.  It was not long before the basket was looking empty.  How could it not?  With the great cheddar and crisp apples, summer sausage and crackers there was no denying some healthy snacks.  Even when everything is done, you are left with a great gift.  The large rectangular Peterboro keepsake basket has so many uses and one of my favorites is to bake up some delicious muffins and rolls and line the basket with a large colorful cloth napkin.  Fill that large basket up with the delicious yummy baked good as a complement to a Sunday family breakfast.

-2 Our Signature Beef Summer Sausages
5 oz.-Farmhouse Cheddar 4 oz.
-2 Crown Comice® Pears
-3 Fuji Apples-2 Red D’Anjou Pears
-5 Mandarin Oranges
-Berry Nut Bounty 4 oz.
-Olive Oil & Rosemary Crackers 1.5 oz.
-Keepsake Peterboro ® Basket

You really can’t go wrong sending a gift from Hickory Farms for the holidays.  Hickory Farms has a special offer, pay only $3 for 3 day shipping.  Now that’s a great deal!!!

“Meet The Feeling Friends” Book and CD Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Meet The Feeling Friends!!!

As a parent, I know how important it is to teach children from the youngest age possible about feelings.  Their feelings, the feelings of people around them and healthy and appropriate ways to express their feelings. Sometimes it’s hard to explain things to a young child in a way they will understand and identify with.  When I find a product that allows me to open a dialogue with my children about issues that are complex, I feel the need to share.  Recently, I was sent, “Meet the Feeling Friends” Book and CD to review.  This book is written by Karen D. Cuthrell (KK) who co-created the Feeling Friends nearly 15 years ago, in an inspired response to her young daughter’s need to express her inner feelings open and honestly.  Each Feeling Friend evolved as a loving guide and conduit for sharing even those hard-to-reveal emotions.

Journey to Feeling Free Island and join KK as she introduces you to her bakers’ dozen of delightful Friends – characters that symbolize the array of primary feelings considered universal to humanity; love, joy, worry, anger, sadness, happiness, loneliness, grumpiness, shyness, panic, caution and confidence!

This book and CD empowers children to identify and express the feelings that hide inside them waiting to be recognized and understood. They give parents and children the vocabulary to talk to each other about feelings. “The Feeling Friends characters are animals and insects presented in real-life situations that teach children about feelings and healthy ways to express them. They are good for children,” says school psychologist Kathy J. Philyaw, Ph.D.

Meet the Feeling Friends™ book and CD allows each Feeling Friend to reveal his or her identity while experiencing the benefits of sharing feelings. The Feeling Friends thrive in the ideal climate where honesty, truth, mutual respect, appropriate timing, and expression, come together to create security and acceptance of feelings – for ourselves and others.

In this delightfully illustrated book you will meet characters like, Worry the Fear Worm, who like his name worries constantly.  Angie the Angry Tiger uses words when he gets mad.  No hitting, punching, kicking or biting, even when he’s angry there’s never any fighting.  You’ll meet Lotta Love the LovaRoo and Joy Bird who sings songs of joy.  Ida the I-Can-Bee is not afraid to follow its dreams and Flutter the Shy Butterfly who has a great big voice inside her.  Your child will absolutely love learning about these characters, and this book is sure to be a springboard that will stimulate a young child to talk about their feelings.

I am feeling very excited to let you know that The Feeling Friends is sponsoring a give-away on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own “Meet the Feeling Friends” Book and CD.  Thanks to The Feeling Friends for this great review set and wonderful give-away that makes me feel happy!!!  Open to US residents.

Continuum Games, Lumps and Family Talk 2 Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

I was recently sent 2 super fun games from Continuum Games for review.

The first has a Christmas theme and is called Lumps. Instead of fearing finding lumps of coal in their Christmas stocking, your child will be begging Santa for some of these Lumps. The Legend of the Lump game is that children around the world have been so good over the past few years; lumps of coal have built up at the North Pole. Puzzled by what to do with the excess coal; Santa’s elves decided to create an exciting new game that uses lumps of coal of all shapes and sizes. Lumps, the Elf Coal Game is the most addictive family dice game you’ll ever play! The goal is to score the most points in three rolls by rolling pairs of the same number. Roll a pair of 3s, score 3 points, a pair of 10s scores 10 points. What makes the game unique is that it has four different types of dice and there are few high numbers. On each turn you have to make decisions on which dice to keep and re-roll. Do you play it safe and hold a pair of 4s, or chance it and try for a high pair? The endless possibilities make Lumps exciting and addictive. This fun game makes a great stocking stuffer! All the coal pieces store in the zippered stocking storage bag.  This game is recommended for ages 6 and up, 1-100 players can play!

The second game is a great game that spurs lots of conversation among family members.  It is called Family Talk 2 and is the second edition of their award-winning Family Talk game.  Engage your family in meaningful conversations with this set of 100 cards filled with new and exciting questions.  This game is perfect to play anywhere, the cards are all on a handy carabiner that makes it the perfect travel game.  Family Talk 2 is the winner of the Tillywig Brain Child Award.  This game is suitable for ages 3 and up.  These cards have thought-provoking questions that will have your whole family talking and discovering new things about each other.

Continuum Games is providing Mommy Rambling’s readers with a discount code that will give them 15% off any www.continuumgames.com purchase.  The discount code is funforallages.  Mommy Ramblings is also adding Continuum Games to our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide because their games make great gifts.

Juppy Baby Walker Review and Give-away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

My baby is starting to get interested in walking, and likes having my husband and I help him, holding him up as he tries out his new found freedom. I always have to give up after a little while because my back hurts from bending over, and losing balance myself all hunched over like that! Well, wouldn’t you know it, there is a new product on the market to make learning to walk a bit easier on parents and baby! The Juppy Baby Walker is a doctor recommended training aid to help teach a baby to walk without the strain and stress on your back. The long adjustable straps allow an adult to hold the baby upright while he tries his balance out, and safely catches him if he starts falling. You can walk without having to hunch over to keep him balanced and safe!

The Juppy is nicely lined in comfy flannel, and the outside is a sturdy canvas that you know he will be safe in. The straps are comfortable and soft to hold, not too stiff, and they are double stitched onto the harness for extra security. The zipper makes it easy to get baby in and out of. You can choose from blue or pink trim and lining! It also comes with a matching carrying case that can fit in a purse or diaper bag for fun on the go!

At first my baby didn’t know what to think of it, but after a while, he got pretty excited that he had the freedom of using his arms for balance while walking instead of me holding them, which in a way, inhibited him from really learning to walk. We only used it for a few short sessions, but I can see how using this Juppy Walker regularly could speed up the learning process and have him walking in a little while!

TheShelvingStore.com, Umbra 5 Hook Flip Coat Rack Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Well, one of my favorite stores for organizational products is theshelvingstore.com.  They recently asked me to do a review of the Umbra 5 Hook Flip Coat Rack  in Espresso.  The rack came with the hardware for hanging.  The only problem was that the template in the instructions did not match the holes on the back of the coat rack so you need to make sure you do not use that or you will be drilling 4 holes in your wall instead of two.  Other than that, you need a drill and a level and you will be able to get it up quickly.  The rack is a neat design with hooks that flip out when needed and back in when not.  It is a nice design and will complement many decors.  When hung properly, the rack is very sturdy and will provide a nice amount of hanging space.

This clean and contemporary wall-mounted coat hanger with multiple coat hooks is a stylish addition to any mudroom. Each hook is recessed until you flip it down for use. Espresso stained and lacquered hardwood with brushed nickel-plated hooks. Home is where you hang your hat, but the flip hook makes it easier to call any place home. Designed by David Quan for Umbra.
Product Dimensions:

Manhattan Toy, Boysterous Action Figures, Slope Shreddin’ Sean Review & Give-Away!!!

If you have little boys and are looking for an original gift this holiday season, you will be very interested in Boysterous Action Figures.  Boysterous is a new line of action figures from Manhattan Toy.  These little boys are on the move just like real boys, they have possible arms and legs that allow them to hold realistic positions.  Their magnetic feet and hands allow them to be posed and played with realistically.  We were sent Slope Shreddin’ Sean for review.  Sean is a rad snowboarder, who is all decked out in his green plaid hoodie, pants and black snowboard boots that have magnetic bottoms to hold him secure to his snowboard.  With his feet firmly planted on the board and his adjustable body, your little boy will have him doing all kinds of break neck stunts.   My 4-year-old loves this little guy and was so excited when he saw he had magnetic feet.  With little ones, it can be so hard when action figures need to be propped or need adult skill to get them to stand or move realistically.  With Boysterous their magnetics make it easy for little hands to put them in a pose and they will stay there.  Boysterous is not a toy that will leave your child frustrated or calling for you to keep fixing something.  There are other four other boys in the Boysterous line and your son will want to collect them all.  You can find Halfpipe Pete, Touchdown Dillon, Goalie Gavin and Slap Shot Sam.
