Hey, Duck! By Carin Bramsen Review & Giveaway!!!

Random_House_logo

An adorable little duckling is trying to befriend another “duck.” However, he is oblivious to the fact that his potential pal is, in fact, a cat. Though resistant and stubborn at first, the cat soon realizes labels don’t matter in the least—and before you know it, meowing and quacking are one and the same.  This is such an adorable book to share with your child that gets across a huge message; friends come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and even species.  Being different does not mean that you can’t be friends and it’s delightful to read along as a duckling and a cat find that out.  This is a great book to celebrate spring or Easter with that special child in your life.  Pick up Hey, Duck! Today!

“Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit: A Book of Changing Seasons” Review & Giveaway!!!

Random_House_logo

I am excited for Spring, Winter has its time but I look so forward to Spring!  I just shared a delightful little board book with my preschooler that tells about Winter turning to Spring.  Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit: A Book of Changing Seasons explains that when it’s Winter different animals do different things, the geese take flight for somewhere warmer, some animals move to warmer waters, others spend the winter hibernating while squirrels gather extra food.  All through the book Rabbit is there observing how other animals survive but when the snow melts and the grass gets green again we all know that Spring has sprung, especially Rabbit!

As with Il Sung Na’s previous books, Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit is filled with rich illustrations, charming animals, and a simple, lyrical text—all wrapped up in a gorgeous package. It’s a gentle introduction to the ideas of adaptation, hibernation, and migration, and an exhuberant celebration of changing seasons.

DC Super Friends, Step Into Reading Hero Story Collection Review and Giveaway!!!

If you have a little boy they are probably superhero fans.  At our house my little boys dress up way more than my daughter ever did and you will find the Hulk in full dress at breakfast or Captain America driving his power wheels around outside.  Truth be told, you would be hard pressed to not find them either wearing a super hero cape, their costumes or at the very least their super hero pajamas.  Their collection of super hero paraphernalia could easily rival any girls princess collection, so it goes without saying they love reading books about superheros.  When we received review books recently we were sent quite a few books featuring them and I want to share one with you now.

If you have an early reader, the Step Into Reading books are so great, they start off on level 1 which is for preschool and kindergarten.  The Step 1 books are perfect for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading.  The books have big type and easy to read words.  The story has rhyme and rhythm and includes picture clues.  Step 2 level is good for preschool to grade 1 and is perfect for children who are recognizing sight words and know how to sound out words with help. The stories have basic vocabulary, short sentences and simple stories.  I received the DC Super Friends, Step Into Reading Hero Story Collection for review.  This book is 5 Step Into Reading Books in one big book.  The book starts with Step 1 and moves on to Step 2.  My 5-year-old is reading sight words and sounding out words so this book is perfect for him.  He loves the superheros and so he is eager to read it with us and learn to read it on his own.  The stories our full of adventures featuring Superman, Batman, Robin, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and more.  The titles in this collection are: Flying High, Going Bananas, Brain Freeze, T.Rex Trouble, and Crime Wave.

The Little Blue Box of Bright and Early Board Books by Dr. Seuss Review & Giveaway!!!

Dr. Seuss books were some of mine and my husband’s favorites as children.  I imagine most of you feel the same.  We all have certain ones that we liked best and if you are like us, you just could not wait to share those books with your child.  I started right from the get go reading aloud to my pregnant belly and even had the Dr. Seuss book that was made to be read to your unborn baby.  It is amazing how even young babies have an interest in looking at books.  However we all know babies are rough on things and drool and so books with paper pages won’t last very long if given to them.  This is the reason I love board books because they take the abuse of babies, toddlers, preschoolers and are easy to clean.  Now if you were to put all that I said together and put it in a box with a bright yellow carrying handle; you would have The Little Blue Box of Bright and Early Board Books by Dr. Seuss.

This delightful little box opens to reveal 4 fabulous board books; Hop on Pop, Oh the Thinks You Can Think!, The Shape of Me and Other Stories and Ten Apples Up On Top!  My three-year old just did a project in preschool that was based on the Ten Apples Up On Top book.  The books are the same as the regular versions, nothing left out or shortened.  They just come in a pint-sized, sturdy version.  This set makes a great gift and Mommy Ramblings thinks it is a perfect gift for little ones this holiday season and we are adding it to our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide.

“Railroad Hank” By Lisa Moser Review and Giveaway!!!

I received the book Railroad Hank by Lisa Moser several weeks ago for review.  I cannot even tell you the amount of times I have read it since then.  It is frequently requested as a bedtime story and I never get tired of reading it.  Railroad Hank is a big teddy bear of a train engineer who has a heart that far outsizes his  brain.  Some might say Hank is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but what he lacks in book smarts he makes up for with a heart of gold.  Railroad Hank travels up the mountain with his trusty dog on a special mission to see Granny Bett because he heard she was feeling blue.

Along the way he stops and sees various friends like Country Carl and Cinnamon Cobbler who generously offer things for him to take to cheer up Granny Bett.  Hank misunderstands exactly what he should be taking and that makes for a very funny story.  Instead of taking Granny Bett some milk from Country Carl’s Cows, Hank takes the Cows and loads them on his train before Country Carl realizes.  The same misunderstandings at every stop leave Hank with a train full of Hens, Cows, barrels full of pond water, an apple tree and a trail of friends chasing him.  When he arrives at Granny Bett’s house she turns from blue to knee slapping laughter as Hank unloads the train and chaos results.  They spend the whole day celebrating with the friends who were chasing the train and then everyone finds a place on the train and Hank even takes Granny Bett along too and hangs her porch swing right on the caboose.

I love to do the voices of the characters when I read stories and this book lets me do so many and it makes it so fun for me and the kids. The illustrations by Benji Davies are just perfect for this story and really give life to the characters. This heartwarming story is sure to delight any child.  Mommy Ramblings loves this book so much we are adding it to our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide because it is such a great gift to share with a special child.

“I Like Old Clothes” by Mary Ann Hoberman Review & Giveaway!!!

I recently received the book, I Like Old Clothes by Mary Ann Hoberman for review.  This is a delightful story that is especially fitting for a child that is the recipient of mostly hand me down clothes.  This book was originally published in 1976 with different illustrations. Follow along as  older sister explains why she likes old clothes to her younger brother.  She loves that the clothes have a history and thinks about who wore them before and what kind of adventures they went on.  It makes a child who may feel bad about or being teased about wearing hand-me-down clothes feel special.

Synopsis

I like old clothes, / Hand-me-down clothes, / Worn outgrown clothes, / Not-my-own clothes. . . . Originally published by Knopf in 1976 (with illustrations by Jacqueline Chwast), this poem—an exuberant celebration of hand-me-down clothes—is just as relevant and accessible today as it was over 30 years ago.  Children’s Poet Laureate Mary Ann Hoberman offers a bouncy, fun-to-read-aloud text and a refreshingly agreeable, resourceful protagonist who likes old clothes for their “history” and “mystery.” Illustrator Patrice Barton brings new, contemporary life to the poem, with an adorable little girl and her younger brother playing dress-up, making crafts, and happily treasuring their hand-me-downs.
About the Author:
Mary Ann Hoberman is the author of And to Think That We Thought That We’d Never Be Friends and many other children’s books.

“Ready For Pumpkins” by Kate Duke Review and Giveaway!!!

Ready For Pumpkins is such an adorable book and so fitting with the season.  Reading it for the first time, I just knew I have to share it with my son’s kindergarten  class.  It is about the class guinea pig named Hercules who watches the first grade class grow plants from seeds and wants to do that too.  During summer vacation when the teacher brings him out to the country with her he gets to do that with a new friend and during that summer he learns so much.  He learns about patience and sometimes having to wait makes things sweeter, he learns about friendship and how hard it can be to say goodbye to old friends and the joy of meeting a whole class of new friends.  All in all he learns that he is a pretty lucky guinea pig.

KATE DUKE has been creating wonderful picture books for more than 25 years. Her best-loved tales often include guinea pigs or mice, like Aunt Isabel Tells a Good One, andGuinea Pig ABC. Ms. Duke lives in New Haven, Connecticut.
