A Right Hand Mom with Left Hand Rage!!!

left handed

I first remember feeling Left Hand Rage, a term I made up, about 15 or more years ago to describe the plight of a right-handed mom who is tired of dealing with buyers and manufacturers who fail to realize the statistical increase in left handers.  Back then I only had 3 children and 2 were left-handed, now I have five and 3 are left-handed.  I am a right-handed and so is my husband.  People always asked me if I was left-handed because I wear my watch on my right hand and I am ambidextrous in a few things so maybe I do share some responsibility.  My parents never switched me, I do know that.

left handed 1

The first time I remember really feeling left-handed rage was when I was searching for a tee ball mitt for my daughter.  I hadn’t waited too late, in fact the stores were overstocked.  I went from store to store that day, and every one I went to did not have any gloves for left handers.  I mean there were hundreds of gloves for kids that were right-handed but the left-handed kids were out of luck.  After going through countless stores, I walked into Dick’s Sporting Goods.  I headed straight to the wall of gloves that was full to the ceiling and started my search with hope and faith that there had to be one left hander’s glove among the hundreds of gloves.  As I started to get further and further through the assorted gloves finding nothing but right-handed  gloves, the stress of the day got to me.  I mean who were these stores employing as buyers and market strategists?  Did they realize that the number of left-handed children was increasing each year?  What trends and statistics were these buyers looking at when ordering gloves?  If it was the manufacturer that just shipped  1 lefty glove with every 2 dozen or so right-handed mitts, what were they thinking?

left handed 2

Now over ¾ of the way through  the gloves I was losing faith, my temper and time.  That was when it hit full force and if you have ever seen the movie, Mommy Dearest, well my next actions mirrored the wire hanger scene.  Instead of pulling the closet doors open looking for a wire hanger, I attacked the assortment of gloves looking for a lefty  with the same tenacity, insanity and rage.   Going through the last ¼ of their supply, I grabbed each glove and  every time I saw it was a righty, they hit the floor.  “Okay Dicks, let’s see just how many right-handed gloves you have in this store!  Right handed, right-handed, right-handed, right-handed,riiiiight haaannded, where are the left-handed gloves?”

left handed4

By this time I had a pile of right-handed mitts beside me and was a Mama Bear with left-handed rage to be reckoned with.  The sales person finally came over and asked if he could help.  I don’t think we need to go into my answer, but you can rest assured it was very Joan Crawford.  I think the scene ended with him helping me through the last few gloves that were not suprisingly all righty.  After giving them my 2 cents and more, I left having to order a glove because there were none to be found.

Now, do you think things have changed in more than a decade?  Let me answer that by letting you know after recently have searched high and low for a glove for my 4-year-old left-handed tee ball player; nope, not a thing!  In fact in the size he needed not one, not even in pink!!!  Left handed kids everywhere are discriminated.  I mean isn’t it bad enough they live in a right-handed world, but could we at least acknowledge the statistical increase of left handers and order them some darn gloves?  Could we give left handers of this world just a little respect?  Is that just too much to ask?  While they’re at it they could also stock up on size xxs baseball pants.

Oh and just remember parents, never try to change your child’s handedness.  A left-handed child is left-handed because the right side of their brain is dominant.  I will leave you with some facts about lefties.

It has been observed that about 66% of American presidents in the last 30 years have been left-handed. The list includes James A. Garfield, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan (switched to right hand for writing in school; perhaps ambidextrous), George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. In the 1992, 1996, and 2008 presidential elections, all major candidates were left-handed: H.W. Bush, Clinton, and Perot; Clinton, Dole, and Perot; McCain and Obama respectively.

According to experts,  left-handed individuals are oriented to be more independent since they have to adjust in a world that is not made for them. Left-handed people are slightly more resistant to social pressures, and tend to have more of an independent streak.

Lefties are quick thinkers, studies show that left-handed people are “exceptional.” A study conducted in Australia revealed that they earn more money and also they think more quickly when playing physical sports or computer games.

Some more famous lefties include:

1.Alexander the great – Military genius
2.Julius Caesar – Military genius
3.Charlemagne – Military genius
4.Napoleon Bonaparte – Military genius
5.Benjamin Franklin – Among the US founding fathers, A renowned polymath
6.Michaelangelo – Artistic genius
7.Leonardo Da Vinci – Genius at almost everything
8.Raphael – Artistic genius
9.Pele, Maradona, Messi – Top three greatest footballers ever
10.Albert Einstein – Scientific genius
11.Sir Isaac Newton – Scientific genius
12.Bill gates – Microsoft founder
13.Mark Twain – Literary genius
14.Ludwig Van Beethoven – Musical genius
15.Pablo Picasso – Artistic genius

Ribbit! by Rodrigo Folgueira, Review & Giveaway!!!

Random_House_logo

Books, Glorious Books!!!  We love them!!!  Sharing books with my kids is very special and bedtime is always a time my husband and I read aloud to them.  A book we recently read was Ribbit! by Rodrigo Folgueira and it was a big hit with a very nice lesson about friends and diversity.

RIBBIT

Ribbit! starts with a mystery of a little pink pig that is sitting on a rock in the frog pond.  No one can figure out why and all the animals really try. At first since all he says is Ribbit! the frogs think maybe he is there to mock them.  In the end it’s determined that the pig is there because he wants to make new friends.  By the time this determination is made, the pig is no longer in the pond but found in a tree sitting and tweeting happily. Soon he is joined by all kinds of new animals friends who are happy to sit together and tweet.

This book shows kids that it doesn’t matter how different we are, we can all be friends.  It’s a great message for kids and a charming book with adorable illustrations by Poly Bernatene.  My son especially loved when the frog was angry and it showed him gnashing a mouthful of white teeth.  We laughed so hard to see a frog with teeth!  Ribbit! is a great book to share with your little ones.

Unexpected Gratitude For Broken Crayons and Eraserless Pencils

800px-Rainy-day-in-Henry-Illinois

It might have been the gray drizzle falling coupled with the  cool morning air, that was surprising given the weather forecast I had watched the night before, that made things feel off.  Whatever it was, as I drove my son to preschool, my mind drifted back to the horrific events that unfolded in Boston yesterday.

Then my mind wandered to the horror that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut a few months ago and how after dropping off one son at preschool, I was headed to volunteer at my other son’s kindergarten class.  I started to think back to something my son’s teacher mentioned during a talk we had the other day about the teachers all locking their classrooms doors now, so they couldn’t be opened from the outside.  The more I thought about all these things together, it made me really uneasy, but I knew I could not let evil win.

You see, I live in a town that is similar to Mayberry, but we all saw last December that even the Mayberrys are not immune from the violence and terror we have seen or have  even come to accept in bigger cities.

large_school bus

Our school is quite secure and has its exterior doors locked and visitors must be buzzed in and checked in with their driver’s license etc.  Well, as I pulled into the parking lot it was very lucky I saw a custodian exiting because when I walked up to the main doors and pressed the buzzer I noticed there was no one at the reception area. After a minute, I buzzed again and that was when had I not seen the custodian, I would have been very alarmed.  I have never been to the school where the reception area was unattended.   That was when I had a bad feeling that something was wrong.  Finally, the woman who was in charge of guest reception emerged from the bathroom and apologized profusely.  I felt better and signed in and walked to my child’s classroom.

When I went in the classroom the children  were all seated on the brightly colored alphabet rug going over some things with their teacher. It’s so funny to hear the things these uninhibited children say.  One little girl was all excited because she was going to get up and show her fellow classmates how she counts to 20 in French.  She went through the numbers 1-20 in French and the other children repeated after her.  When she was done, one of the little boys raised his hand and said that his sister takes French and he thinks she said the right words. The teacher agreed telling them that the little girl’s mom speaks fluent French.  After she said this the classroom aide, turned to me and whispered, “Yes, but her pronunciation was off.”  I could not help but  chuckle to myself.

earth day

I was going to be helping in the Science center as the kids rotated through the various centers and helping with an Earth Day Poster.  As the teacher was explaining what they would be putting on their poster, one of the sections was to draw a picture of something they could do in their neighborhood to make a difference.   Many hands went up and one little girl said she could help her dad rake outside and clean up his mess.  To which the teacher replied, “That’s good you can help you dad clean up his mess.”

As the kids got up and went to the different centers, the reading center was being attended by the teacher who was doing reading groups.  I heard one of the boys tell her that the classroom aide says that when you fart it’s called passing gas.  To which the teacher with the straightest face declared that was correct, and it was called passing gas.  This and about a dozen similar funny comments from the mouths of babes made me just shake my head and chuckle to myself.    Then as I was helping all these individual and beautiful children with their posters, teaching some how to easily draw a butterfly and knowing how it takes a village to raise a child and privileged to be able to help nurture these little minds, it came back.  That terrible thought came back.

I thought about the unspeakable evil that was unleashed on children just a little older than the ones surrounding me.  How they were probably doing very similar things as these children when evil entered. Children who should be thinking about Earth  Day and making posters with their class, children whose greatest problem would be waiting for their turn to use a certain color crayon.  Children who were no longer in school, no longer with their families, no longer in this life due to the deranged actions of a very disturbed young man.   I was snapped quickly back to the present by the children asking me to look at their work or where they were to  glue what and was thankful for that.

Thankful because when we live in a world where evil does not discriminate between the big cities and the Mayberrys of our world, we need to cherish our every moment and live life to the fullest.  I was extremely blessed to be helping in my son’s class with his friends and classmates, listening to their laughter and helping them draw butterflies.

broken crayons

Looking down at the broken crayons that were once whole and  new in September and are now broken and very used, I mentioned to one of the little girls that it looked like they needed some fresh new crayons.  She agreed and then told me that the next table needs new pencils because  people have been eating the erasers.  A smile and a small laugh could not help but escape my lips and a silent prayer that broken crayons and eraserless pencils are the only problems  these kids will need to deal with.
