The Shelving Store, P’Kolino Colorful Toy Bins Review & Giveaway!!!

Many of my dedicated readers will immediately recognize the logo above and of course the name of The Shelving Store.  I am so privileged to be able to work with such a great sponsor and review so many of their useful products.  I am back again, to tell you about another great product that has multiple uses and will help your kids stay organized.  I know January is typically a month for renewed promises or resolutions, and most revolve around changes that will better our lives.  Getting organized, getting healthy, setting career goals and much more.  I think  getting organized not only has to do with the significance of the start of a new year, but also in response to the deluge of holiday gifts that must be integrated into a household that may already be packed full of stuff.  The best thing I can tell you, is to go through the stuff that is overwhelming and decide what you really need, donate the rest and trash the junk.  Same goes for our kids, they can easily be overwhelmed with the sheer volume of toys and games, that it actually makes them frustrated.  How many of you have toy boxes filled with toys that your kids don’t even look at, except when dumping them on the floor?

I was recently at a birthday party for my 4-year-old son’s friend.  I was totally amazed at my friend’s house.  She had just about every toy imaginable, but she was so organized, and it was not just for the party.  She admits she has OCD and cannot sleep if everything is not in place.  In fact, I could see her struggling not to want to clean up while a tribe of 4 and 5-year-old kids took over her house.  Now, I was really impressed because it was not a huge home and yet it seemed to have plenty of room for the multitude of toys.  As I interacted with the other moms and kids, I was still thinking of how my home that is very large and filled with multiple play rooms and areas for the kids to play, looked like a tornado hit most of the time.  My over thinking brain needed to find out what was going on.  I soon did as I realized in one of the rooms that would normally be the living room or living room, dining room combination she had basically set up as a large playroom for the kids.  There was no adult furniture except for a grand piano, a small computer desk and a bookcase that held some toys neatly on shelves.   The rest of the room was geared toward play and had  a large train table, multiple bins of cars and trucks which were now empty and strewn about the room, race tracks, some ride on toys, and the walls were covered with the children’s artwork.

Her boys are about the same ages as my youngest 2 children and I totally laughed when my son Ethan came into the kitchen to show me this large Fisher Price Amazing Animal Train that he thought was the greatest thing.  The funny thing was, we had the same train but he probably never saw it together like that and with all the animals in it.  She had all the cars attached with a string so they could not come apart and she had every one of those animals in their place.  Now Ethan had this toy since he was a little baby and you can literally find those animals in every room or our house.  I could not even begin to tell you where the train cars are, except that they are probably in the basement playroom somewhere.

She had a small sun room that was again filled with only kid’s things,  she had a tent set up and some other toys, in the family room was the only couch in the house and she had an entertainment center and another bookcase on which all of their games were neatly stacked.  There were also multiple bins of carefully sorted trucks and toys.  At the time I was thinking, how does she do this?  I was not alone, as the moms all sat down and asked her, exactly that question.  We told tales of how our kids just love to empty toy boxes for the thrill of it.  How if our games were all stacked like that we would walk into the room to see our kids with them all opened and the pieces lost, and other tales of chaos from mothers like me.  She laughed and explained again how she is OCD and really is constantly putting things away and making sure every piece of every game was accounted for.  Her older sister was there and she was laughing and telling me she was trying to keep tabs on everything because she knew how her sister was.  This woman was tracking down every Elefun net and butterfly and rounding them up.

My friend did admit that her children were very neat by nature and were also stressed if things were in disarray.  She told me that one day she was playing a game on the floor with her youngest son, when she looked at the clock and saw it was time to pick up her older son from preschool.  She left the game on the floor figuring they would play when they got home.  She told me that when her older son walked in the house he immediately asked her why the game was not put away.

So I have rambled on here and you are probably wondering my point.  Well, my point is that we can’t all be like that.  We can try to control the chaos and try to keep things as organized as possible.  I think we can also instill in our children a sense of keeping things in their place so that everything is there and ready the next time they want to play.  I have been doing this with my little ones and it is really working.  Yesterday, I gave Ethan a huge set of  Colorforms even though I was afraid that it would  soon be strewn all over.  I explained to him that we needed to put everything away so that he would have it to play with again and again.  Well, do you know he played with that all day, and he put every Colorform piece back on the original spaces in the large spiral bound book that you peel them off of.  I am talking about even the tiniest triangles.  I told him he could put them anywhere on the page but he put each color back in the exact outline of each shape.  Then he packed it all in the box and he did this every time he played with it.  It was a small moment of joy for me.

I know my kids love to have a special place for things and they will be more apt to put things away when it is accessible and easy for them.  Like our kid’s coat closet has a coat rack on the inside of the door at their level, so even when they are too young to use the hangers they can easily put their coats and backpacks on the hooks.  My sons love that they can do this.

Anyway, as I was looking over The Shelving Store’s website, I saw some P’kolino Containers that caught my eye.  First, they came in great colors and they had a hard wood lid.  So when I was asked if I wanted to do another review, I requested these.  I ordered green for my one son because it is his favorite color and red for my other son.  When they arrived I was really impressed.  They were very good quality.  Many times you see bins like this and within days they are cracking from simple use.  These bins were thick and tough and made for kids.  The tops were great, sturdy wood, smooth edges and they fit on top in the recessed  edges and did not slide.  When I saw them in person, I realized just how useful they were.  While I had originally thought to review them as bins to hold the kids toys, I now saw them as much more.  They were very portable and would be great for vacations where the kids could put their special toys in them and also have a type of lap desk they could use in the car.  I saw that these would be wonderful for them to use on the floor as a perfect little table where they could assemble puzzles, work on workbooks, draw, play with Play-Doh on and a multitude of other activities.  Things could be stored in the bin and then it could open like a desk and taken out to play on the wood top.  My kids loved this idea and will carry them from their bedroom to the family room and back again.  I really love them and I don’t think they are just for kids because I have found they make a great laptop desk if you are doing some work from your bed and you can have your laptop perched on the wood top and supplies in the bin.  Would work great for tweens and teens too.

So if you are looking for a bin that has multiple uses, something that will appeal to your kids, can be purchased in your child’s favorite color and even function as a workstation for adults, then check out the P’kolino colorful toy bins.

P’kolino products meet or exceed US, EU, and Canadian safety standards. Independently Tested for durability, toxicity, mechanical safety, regulatory standards, use and abuse and age grading.  These sturdy storage bins integrate into many of P’Kolino’s products for added organization. They can be easily removed and replaced with another play kit for a simple way to change the activity and to organize your child’s toys. Small enough to fit on most shelves and large enough to hold art supplies, coloring books, blocks or small toys. They are also a fabulous storage system even if you don’t have another P’kolino piece to use them in. For a fabulous color statement in a playroom, bedroom or office, stack various colored bins on top of one another.

The Shelving Store is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win a P’Kolino Colorful Toy Bin in their color choice.  Thank you to The Shelving Store for the review bins and for this wonderful giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

Cakedy, Minnesota’s Candy Bar Review & Giveaway!!!

Who doesn’t like to try a new sweet treat?   No one I know, that’s for sure.  I was happy to be asked to review a tasty cake and candy treat called Cakedy.  Cakedy (cake-uh-dee) is a unique blend of delicious homemade cake, whipped into a moist nougat and covered in rich candy shell. Cakedy comes in four delicious flavors, Choco Chocatus, Vanocolate, RedHead and Peanutter. Cakedy is also known as Minnesota’s Candy Bar.  They come in 2 bar packs, and I received the Vanocolate flavor.  Vanocolate is white cake with vanilla frosting nougat covered in a chocolate shell.  It was delicious, sort of like a cake pop bar is the closest way I can describe it to you.  I cut the bars into pieces and shared with the little kids and hubby.  Everyone liked it and when my little Luke saw me posting the pics for the review he told me we needed to get more of that Neeni (his word for candy).  You can try these yummy Cakedy bars for yourself by going to Cakedy.com.

Scout,The Stiff One,Hard Bottom Insulated Cooler Review & Giveaway!!!

I recently had the opportunity to pick something from Scout to review.  After spending a lot of time browsing their immense selection of great products, I decided on The Stiff One.  The Stiff One is a hard bottomed insulated cooler which I chose in the Stripe Deux Soliels fabric.  The reason I picked this cooler is because it would be so handy to keep in the car for cold treats that we buy in the spring and summer months, when grocery shopping. No more worrying about them melting or spoiling if not kept cold.  I also thought it would be great for bringing cold drinks and snacks to the beach, lake, kid’s sports games and practices.  When it arrived it was folded completely flat on it’s hard bottom.  What a great cooler that takes up no space until you need it.  It easily expands to become a good size cooler.  The fabric is bright and cheerful and the straps even have a velcro connector so that it is easy to carry. Everything in very well made and there is a zippered pocket on the front and a velcro pocket on the back.  This cooler is going to be great when traveling, because we can keep a good amount of snacks and drinks ice-cold,even on summer road trips.

Scout has a wide selection of bags for just about everything and every occasion.  You can even find bags for bridesmaid’s gifts and wedding favors.  Lots of great colors, prints and patterns so you can mix and match your bags.  If you are looking for bags for travel, picnics, tailgating, babies, storage, and more, you have to take a look at Scout.  You are sure to find just what you are looking for and much, much more.

I am happy to let you know that Scout is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own Stiff One-Cooler Bag.  Thank you Scout for the review bag and for sponsoring this cool giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

The Knot Genie™ Detangling Brush Review & Giveaway!!!

Of my five children my oldest two and my youngest have curly hair.  My oldest daughter and son had the Shirley Temple ringlet curls that everyone adored.  Their thick hair fell in such perfect ringlets, that I was often asked if I put them to bed in sponge rollers.  Of course I did not, but they were just blessed with this gorgeous hair.  What did not seem like a blessing to them was  brushing out the tangles.  My daughter especially, since her hair was long endured much hair trauma.  As gentle as I tried to be as I brushed it out, holding the top so it would not pull and using gallons of Johnson & Johnson’s No More Tangles, it was one of my least favorite things and she felt the same.  Now my youngest child Luke is also blessed with wavy curly hair and the tangles that come with that beauty.  We have used similar no tangle sprays and they work, but when I was recently asked to review a new brush called the Knot Genie, I was game.

When I received the Puff of Purple Knot Genie review brush it could not have come at a better time.  I was just ready to brush the tangles from the back of his hair.  Normally this is not a fun process, but he was very interested in the new brush.  I ran the brush through the back of his hair, no sprays, not holding it, and it passed right through his curly hair leaving it untangled and brushed in a couple of strokes.  He did not feel any pain and really liked it.  In fact my 4-year-old begged me to brush his hair and it worked great on his straight hair too and left it even smoother and shinier.  I really wish I had this when my oldest two were little.  It would have prevented many tears from us both.  If you’re dealing with tangles and tears, you should really try the Knot Genie because it works and will leave you and your child smiling.

The Magic trick behind the Knot Genie™ is one we are happy to reveal. It all has to do with the different lengths of teeth on the brush. When brushing, they bend just right, to gently untangle the hair. And because of this lack of stress, the hair’s cuticle stays unharmed… revealing the smoothest, shiniest hair you’ve ever seen.

Handles like a dream. The fact that The Knot Genie isn’t like traditional hair brushes goes way beyond the bristle side. Its unique cloud-shaped top fits the palm nicely, whether you’re right or left-handed. Which means it feels more like an extension of your hand than a grooming tool. And also means the brushing process is far more comfortable, gentle, and most importantly, done quickly. Voila!

Magically gets rid of knots. Not to mention complaining.

The Knot Genie™ Detangling Brush was created for every mom that has endured the foot stomping and screaming matches that come with brushing their child’s hair. With the Knot Genie, even the curliest, most knotted up hair practically slips through the unique bristle configuration – gently and painlessly. Try the Knot Genie on your kids (or on yourself) – you’ll be amazed by the ease of brushing, as well as how it virtually stops breakage and split ends. You’ve wished for hair brushing standoffs to end. Wish granted.

Knot Genie is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win a Puff of Purple Knot Genie, just like mine.  Thank you Knot Genie for the review brush and for sponsoring this great giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

Portrait Classroom: Baby and Child Photography Tutorials, iPhone and iPad App Review & Giveaway!!!

One of the first things I am asked when people look at the portraits I take of my children, is how do you get a young child or children to pose, sit still, and cooperate when taking their picture?  I have a lot of ways that I make taking pictures fun for my kids, I also have a studio in my home so if they are having an off day, no big deal, we will just try again another day.  I remember especially with my older children, the stress of having portraits taken, the Christmas card photo, the family portraits.  How many times I was rushing with multiple children for an appointment, set weeks before, never knowing what their mood would be, then if we had to wait, they got cranky and they definitely felt all the stress too.

I always loved photography but really got into it when it all went digital and several years ago after the birth of my fourth child, and one or two more studio experiences, I decided to take my own portraits. In the beginning, I just used my Canon DSLR and a Speedlight, I had some backdrops I made and I also took pictures outside.  I never took a photography course in school or college, as I am mostly self-taught.  I have a good eye for what I want and I love using props, especially with little ones.  It was not very long before I upgraded my camera and with the help of a photographer friend bought some great lights.  She helped me make the decision to go for some very good lights for my studio instead of starting with a basic set and then upgrading.  I am so thankful to her and others who helped me make some great choices.  I love my lights.  I quickly began outfitting my studio with loads of different color seamless paper backdrops, fabric back drops, props, posing tables, and much more. I have seen myself grow so much since I started and I have such a passion for photography.  My home is full of portraits of my children, our family, our pets, my flowers, my gardens, and beautiful scenic shots of the mountains we live in or the beaches we vacation on.  Every time I see them, I smile.

So maybe you are looking to get started in digital photography.  There are a lot of questions you might have.  It would be nice to have a resource at your fingertips that could help you learn the basics and then some.  I recently was asked by Kim Binfield, if I wanted to review a iPad App called  “Portrait Classroom: Baby and Child Photography Tutorials”

PORTRAIT CLASSROOM is geared towards parents, hobbyists, and aspiring pro photographers who want a hands-on guide to taking better pictures of babies and children. For those who have bought a DSLR camera but can’t get photos any better than their point-and-shoot camera, or if they are using their DSLR on ‘green’ auto mode, then this App is for them!
Users of PORTRAIT CLASSROOM will learn how to get professional looking results with their existing camera equipment and learn about additional photography gear, software, Photoshop actions and other resources, much of it inexpensive, that can further enhance their portraits. A number of the tips included in the App can also be applied to point-and-shoot cameras.

I downloaded the App on my iPad 2 and it was so easy to use.  I can see this being an excellent tool for the person wanting to get started in baby and child photography.  It has tutorials that take you through all the steps from set up and lighting through to image editing.  Lots of resources for photo actions, equipment, suppliers, props and more.  A glossary is provided to look up any terms you may not be familiar with.  This App is a great reference to have at your fingertips.  Lots of great tips and advice that will have you feeling more confident as a photographer.

Portrait Classroom and Kim Binfield Photography are sponsoring a giveway on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win a code to download this App free on their iPhone or iPad.  Thank you Kim Binfield Photography and Portrait Classroom for the review App and for sponsoring this great giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!   Open to US residents.

“REAL STEEL” on Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack Review & Giveaway!!! $5.00 Off Coupon Bonus!!!

On January 24th REAL STEEL on Blu-ray & DVD will be released.  I was recently sent a Real Steel Blu-ray & DVD to review. We really liked this movie. Set in the near future when boxing was deemed too dangerous for humans and replaced with Bots, Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a down on his luck boxer who lost his chance at a title when  the Bots took over the sport.  Charlie’s estranged 11-year-old son Max played by Dakota Goyo shows up in his life when his mother dies.
When Max discovers a robot named Atom, he forms a bond with him and although he is told Atom is junk and should be sold for parts, he stands up for him.  So there is Atom, the underdog Bot who with the love and loyalty of a little boy starts to rise against all odds.  When offered a huge sum of money for Atom which Charlie wants to take, Max will not hear of it.  The culmination brings this father and son together as they have to trust in each other to help Atom in his greatest fight.  You will be cheering for this underdog of a robot the way you did for Rocky and the father and son dynamic reminded me of, The Champ.  I really liked this movie and it will really pull at your heart-strings as it brings the father and son together and shows that a winner is not always determined by a title.  This movie is a winner for our family and I think it will be for many others.  A true feel good family movie that will have you cheering out loud.

The Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack has Exclusive Bonus Features:
2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack  (1 Blu-ray Disc + 1 DVD)

REAL STEEL SECOND SCREEN

Countdown to the Fight—The Charlie Kenton Story

Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ

PLUS All DVD Bonus Features

 1-Disc DVD (1 DVD)

Making of Metal Valley

Bloopers

Our favorite Bonus Feature was Countdown To The Fight: The Charlie Kenton Story which was cool because it had the feel of  a VH1 Behind the Music episode.  It gave you an in depth look at Charlie Kenton, his youth, his life, and the interviews in it from Hugh Jackman as Charlie and Dakota Goyo as Max, really were believable and made everything seem like a true story.  It was very interesting.

Ozeri, 8″ Green Earth Smooth Ceramic, Non-Stick Frying Pan Review and Giveaway!!! 5 Winners!!!

We are no stranger to the quality products from Ozeri.  We have featured many of their products in reviews and giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  Recently, I was asked if I wanted to review the Ozeri, 8″ Green Earth Smooth Ceramic, Non-Stick Frying Pan.  I happily accepted and I am very glad I did.  Utilizing natural ceramic as a coating, the Green Earth Pan by Ozeri is one of the world’s first frying pans to achieve non-stick perfection while remaining absolutely free of PTFE, PFOA and other harmful chemicals. Conventional non-stick cookware is achieved through a coating of PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene), a synthetic substance that has waxy properties. At very high temperatures, PTFE begins to decompose and release fumes which are documented to be lethal to birds and small pets, and which can be harmful to humans. In addition, traditional pans incorporating PTFE are manufactured with the aid of PFOA (PerFluoroOctanoic Acid), which the EPA has classified as a ‘persistent pollutant of the environment’.

The 8" Green Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri, with Smooth Ceramic Non-Stick Coating (100% PTFE and PFOA Free)

With the Green Earth Pan’s ecozeri technology, even under high temperatures, no harmful toxic fumes are ever released into the environment. This is because the Green Earth Pan by Ozeri utilizes a 100% ceramic coating derived from nature – not from a laboratory. The Green Earth Pan’s ceramic coating is completely free of PTFE and PFOA. In addition to being completely eco-friendly and ultra-safe, the Green Earth Pan’s natural ceramic coating is far more durable and scratch-resistant than other non-stick surfaces. With better non-stick properties, the Green Earth Pan by Ozeri allows you to cook with as little as half the amount of oil normally used, and it makes cleaning a breeze. The Green Earth Pan by Ozeri is made of the highest quality anodized aluminum that allows for even cooking and fantastic browning without the risk of hot spots. It boasts a magnetized bottom for rapid heat transfer on induction stoves, and a heat-resistant Bakelight handle.

The 8" Green Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri, with Smooth Ceramic Non-Stick Coating (100% PTFE and PFOA Free)

This pan feels great and I love that it is non-stick without all the harmful chemicals and materials found in most non-stick cookware.  My daughter tested this pan out and she loved it.  Nothing stuck, everything turned over very easily and the pan was a cinch to clean.  It heated evenly and quickly and was a pleasure to use.  If you are looking for safe options in non-stick cookware, check out Ozeri’s Green Earth Pans.

I am happy to tell you that Ozeri is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  Five lucky blog readers will win their own Ozeri, 8″ Green Earth Smooth Ceramic, Non-Stick Frying Pan.  Thank you Ozeri for the review pan and for sponsoring this great giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

SilkFudge Review and Giveaway!!!

SilkFudge is made with quality simple ingredients like great quality chocolate, cream, butter and sugar.  Made is small, four pound batches with each being tested to make sure there is not any sugar grain.  SilkFudge is just that, the silkiest fudge you will ever taste.  Started by a couple who was tired of grainy, sweet cocoa tasting fudge, who knew their family recipe, that was already a hit with family and friends was far superior. With a large variety of scrumptious flavors of white, dark and milk chocolate fudge you may find yourself drooling over their webpage.  I was sent a beautiful gift box with four flavors of SilkFudge; Almond Joy, Milk Chocolate Original, Dark Chocolate  with Mixed Nuts and White Chocolate Orange Cream Fudge.

I love chocolate, but will tell you that a lot of the fudge I have tasted was always way too sweet and heavy.  The SilkFudge beautiful box was just the beginning, opening the box there were four large squares of thick fudge wrapped and tied with a tulle ribbon.  I unpacked the squares and in no time my little ones were quickly at my sides, eager to see the yummy treats.  My 4-year-old tasted the first sample of the milk chocolate fudge and just seeing him eat it, I could tell it was not heavy or too sweet.  He absolutely loved it and wanted a second piece, after taking a bite myself I knew why.  This was a very silky fudge that was not sickly sweet but had a wonderful chocolate taste which together with the smoothness was just Heavenly.  My favorites were the Dark Chocolate with Mixed Nuts and the Almond Joy flavors.  The little ones gravitated toward the Milk Chocolate and the White Chocolate Orange Cream.  The rest of the family made short work of the remaining fudge, finding all the flavors delicious.

If you are craving some smooth, silky, flavorful fudge then you need to look at SilkFudge. SilkFudge is great for your family and makes a beautiful gift.

SilkFudge is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own box of SilkFudge (a $38.00 value).  Thank you SilkFudge for the review fudge and for sponsoring this sweet giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.
