“How To Be A Lion” Book Giveaway

I want to introduce you to a new picture book by the New York Times bestselling author/illustrator of Max the Brave comes an inspiring and adorable picture book about a pair of unlikely friends who face down a pack of bullies, Ed Vere. How To Be A Lion shows kids that you don’t have to roar to be heard.

Leonard is a lion who has a duck named Marianne, as his best friend. One day the lion bullies come around, and tell Leonard they understand he is different, he likes writing poetry and being gentle, but not chomping a duck is going too far.

Leonard and Marianne find a way to show the lion bullies that there is more than one way to be a lion. In the end, the words Marianne and Leonard put together, show the bullies that they should worry about being themselves and let Leonard be who he is.

The story reinforces the importance of accepting people for who they are and to stop using stereotypes of the way they should act. It is an important lesson that is conveyed beautifully on the pages.

Ed Vere’s new book is part of trend in children’s literature – books meant to empower boys to think independently, engage with their emotions, and not conform to traditional gender roles.

In a recent interview about the topic, Vere said: “Too often strength and sensitivity are presented as mutually exclusive. We need to teach compassion, respect and empathy at an early, foundational age. If we can teach this to boys at around five, and demonstrate that being gentle, sensitive or emotionally engaged isn’t a weakness, but part of being a fully rounded grown up man, then we’re getting the message through to them before toxic attitudes have a chance to solidify.”

Ed’s book, HOW TO BE A LION, is being praised for successfully conveying this important message.

  • “Positive role models showing boys how to be a whole person are few and far between these days. This marvelous book triumphs in that essential job.” – Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
  • “Vere’s fable makes a watertight—and charming—case for ignoring the pressures of conformity.” – Publishers Weekly
  • “Children will feel empowered after reading such a deliberate story of unyielding strength and self-awareness. Thoughtful and provocative words to live by.” – School Library Journal

“The Girl With A Mind For Math:The Story of Raye Montague” Book Review & Giveaway

The message in The Girl With A Mind For Math:The Story of Raye Montague is, if there is something you want, you need to focus your mind on it. Your dream may seem out of reach, people may tell you that you can’t do it, but you need to keep going, and you will succeed,  like one bold engineer named Raye Montague.

This is a story of a woman who realized her dream when basically everything was against her. Being born a girl of color in the south where segregated schools were the norm, Raye was met with negativity at nearly every turn, when she talked about becoming an engineer who designs ships.

Raye was lucky to have the support of her family, they told her to keep going no matter what. Raye was resourceful, when the schools did not teach what she wanted to learn, she learned it on her own. She was a voracious reader, and even when she found out engineering was not offered to her in college. she took business instead.

Raye went to Washington, D.C. after graduating college with honors and landed a position as a typist for the Navy. There she not only did her job, but learned all she could from the ship designing engineers. At night she went to school to learn computers.

It all paid off even though Raye faced discrimination for being black and being a woman. She never let that stop her, and pushed through the barriers she needed to. A stroke of luck got her promoted when she got to show off all she knew. Learning computers helped her design a special system to design a ship for the president in just 18 hours.

This is a book about rising above all the odds. It is inspirational and educational. Great to read to your kids, grandkids or use in the classroom. The end of the book has pages about Raye’s real life, advice from her and a timeline of all she achieved. The book is written by Julia Finley Mosca and is illustrated by Daniel Rieley.

“Life According to Og the Frog” Book Review & Blog Tour

Friday was the last day of school for my little ones, but even though the saying goes “no more teachers, no more books”, that is not exactly true in our house.

We are a book loving family, so a summer without books, would be a miserable summer. Even if your middle school child is not an enthusiastic reader, The Life of Og the Frog by Betty G. Birney will be one they want on their summer reading list.

Now, you may be familiar with the adventures in The World According to Humphrey who is the class pet in Room 26. This book also takes place in Room 26, but it is told from the perspective of Og the Frog! Og used to live in a marsh, but he has found himself as the newest class pet in Room 26.

There is so much Og the Frog wants to know. Of course he misses his friends from the pond, everyone except the bullying bullfrogs. The water in his tank is very clean, maybe a little too clean, Og the Frog enjoys a little muck every now and again, after all. The classroom is full of strange, unfamiliar noises and there is a furry, squeaky fellow living next to him, who is very entertaining. The kids are sure friendly and they put the biggest, fattest crickets right in Og’s tank!

All these new experiences give Og lots of inspiration for what he loves to do best, making up songs and poems. All was going along fine, Og the Frog was trying to figure out Humphrey, getting to know the kids better and then there was the frog debate. The debate had to do with whether or not to send Og to live in his own environment at Piney Woods or let him stay in room 26.

Og the Frog had a lot of feelings during the debate discussion and vote. Would he have to say goodbye to the kids he lovingly refers to as the Tads. What about Tabitha? Tabitha’s whole life had changed just like Og’s had. Og thought about Mandy, the little girl who finally started seeing the bright side of things thanks to his help. Let’s not forget about Humphrey who Og was finally beginning to figure out.

The tads had a discussion and took a vote. As their teacher starts pulling out the folded slips of paper and reading them to the class, it is only a matter of minutes before Og will know his fate.

About the Author:

Betty G. Birney has won many awards for writing for television, including an Emmy, three Humanitas Prizes, and a Writers Guild of America Award. In addition to the Humphrey series, she is the author of The Seven Wonders of Sassafrass Springs and The Princess and the Peabodys. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where her parents grew up as neighbors on Humphrey Street.

The Life of Og the Frog is a good book to read aloud with your kids or to let them read aloud to you. Of course, it makes wonderful reading for kids in grades 3-7 to read on their own as well. Let me know if, The Life of Og the Frog will be hopping onto your middle schooler’s summer reading list.

We do it every day, at least 2 or 3 times, and maybe more on some days. It becomes routine, something we don’t even think about really. We go through the motions and move on with our day or go right to bed afterward. Of course, I am talking about brushing our teeth. Are you happy with your toothbrush? I mean, really happy? Is it getting your teeth and gums as clean as they can be?

What if I told you about a better toothbrush? By better, I mean it is the smartest toothbrush on the block! The Oral-B GENIUS 8000 can be paired with your smartphone through the Oral-B App using Bluetooth technology. Brushing my teeth has never been so fun and effective!

The Oral-B GENIUS 8000 was designed to help you brush like your dentist recommends. When you pair it with your smartphone through the special Oral-B App, you can get customized, real-time feedback about your brushing habits. The Position Detection technology ensures you never miss a zone and the brush and app help make sure you brush for the recommended 2 minutes and include a pressure alert to protect your gums from over-brushing.

This toothbrush and its technology are beyond cool! I downloaded the free Oral-B App quickly through the App Store for my iPhone X, but it is also available for Android users through Google Play. Upon opening the App, I was able to easily personalize it for me, including selecting my favorite color LED light for the 360 SmartRing. When I brush using the App, it lets me know if I am missing any zone, so I can adjust my technique. My teeth and gums not only feel clean and fresh, I know they are!

The Oral-B GENIUS 8000 is compatible with all the Oral-B brush heads. There are 3 different heads in the package to get you started, along with a handy brush head holder that fits right on top of the charging base.
