Do you ever feel like you need some reassurance, especially in your faith?  I think most of us can relate to that. Sometimes we need to be reminded and shown that just because we cannot see something, does not mean it does not exist.  When you are feeling down or having trouble accepting things that may be occurring in your life, it can have you doubting your faith.

Perhaps you have lost someone you love and want desperately to know they are still around. Maybe you are praying for a sign.  The Chicken Soup for the Soul: Hope & Miracles book is full of 101 miraculous stories of hope, faith, divine intervention and answered prayers that will amaze you.  These encouraging stories will lift your spirits and restore your faith.

Read about the mother of a Sandy Hook shooting victim who prayed for a sign that here son Jesse was okay and minutes later saw “Jesse & Jesus” written in the sky.  You will be amazed when you read how a grieving daughter remembering her mom’s appearance on the show, Let’s Make A Deal, went there herself.  She was picked from the audience and won a new car!  A woman sitting on a bench, suddenly hears her mother’s voice and it forces her off the bench. A few moments later a tree falls on the bench.  If that does not have you believing, it was also the anniversary of her mom’s death.  In another story a brother and sister who were separated at British orphanage during World War II were reunited 75 years later in Australia.  Read  about a businessman turned paster who did not believe in miracles until he laid his hands on a paralyzed man who then walked into his office a few weeks later.  There are 96 other stories that are powerful examples of our connection to a higher power that will fill you with awe and give your strength when you are weak.

#MaxYourTax With Walmart’s Lowest Priced Unlimited Plans

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #MaxYourTax #CollectiveBias

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  Imagine me singing that, on second thought, maybe you shouldn’t. However, I’m sure many were singing a similar tune when they received their tax refund check this year.  If you are like me with a family, home and busy life, that money is very welcome.  I am a very big saver and I like to get the most bang for my buck on what I do spend.  I guess you could say, I like to see just how much I can save when buying the things we need.  I really scored big in that department this year, I want to share my story with you and hopefully help you #MaxYourTax return this year.

Walmart Family Mobile Hero

Cell phone plans can be so expensive, especially when your kids get to the age that they all need a phone and plan.  It can easily get way out of hand for most families.  We have a family of 7 and 5 of us all have smartphones so it can be hard to find something affordable.  I can hardly believe my 4th child is going to be joining the phone carrying crew and so I started to scout out options.  I mean I want something affordable and a phone that is not going to cost $600!

While at Walmart picking up some essentials, I happened to notice the Walmart Family Mobile service has the lowest priced unlimited plans, just $29.88 a month for the first line.  That is for unlimited talk, text/data service which includes up to 500MB of 4G LTE data  What a deal!  This is perfect for him and it definitely lets me maximize my tax refund!

I was able to pick up the Samsung Galaxy Avant and starter kit for just $149 for the phone and $25 for the starter kit.

Family mobile store 2015 #maxyourtax

While picking that out I noticed ZTE Zinger was marked down in price to  $19.84 from the original price of $39.88, that is a great way to really get value for your tax dollars.

You know since I was able to save so much on the phone and service, I have some extra tax return money to put toward something else.  Maybe toward creating an even bigger butterfly garden.  Can you tell I am sick of snow and looking forward to spring?  I would love for you to share with me how you plan to #MaxYourTax this year.  Please share your best ways to do that in the comments.  I love to read your great ideas.

Measles Cases Rising And Junk Science Is To Blame?

vaccine 1

So unless you’ve been under a rock, you’re well aware of the measles outbreak that started in Disneyland and has now spread to 121 cases across the U.S.  Doctors, the American Academy of Pediatrics, CDC, and more are urging parents to get their children vaccinated.

This has created a storm of opposition from the anti-vax parents.  Seemingly unconcerned with what they deem a mild or non-serious illness, they are defending their rights not to vaccinate.  They feel they are protecting their children from autism which they believe is caused by the MMR vaccine.  The study that perpetuated the myth was retracted and deemed junk science. Regardless, they remain steadfast in their decision not to vaccinate despite increased concern of a measles epidemic.

mickey_mouse_measles

I thought I would research the answers to questions that people have been asking regarding all this debate.   So let’s look at what perpetuated the notion that the MMR vaccine was causing Autism?

We need to go back to 1988, when a doctor in the UK by the name of Andrew Wakefield published a study with just 12 child subjects. The children were brought to his clinic suffering from diarrhea and/or abdominal pain.  These children were said to have a history of normal development but subsequently lost certain skills.  When Wakefield was gathering their medical history, he asked the parents when their child received the MMR vaccine and how that correlated to their loss of skills. Based upon this data, Wakefield believed there was a connection between the vaccine and autism.

However, there was no objective scientific data to back his theory up, it was based on the recall of the parents. Given that some of the vaccines were administered as much as 9 years prior, there is reasonable concern about the accuracy.   What is even more troubling, is that Wakefield, claimed that the bowel dysfunction was caused by the MMR vaccine which then caused the autism, even though 4 of the 12 children in the study experienced behavioral disorders prior to the bowel issues.  This fact alone refutes Wakefield’s theory.

There was also no control group, a critical omission casting more doubt on his findings.  A good standard of science, is that the findings can be replicated in a separate setting.  After sharing specimens with colleagues at the Royal Free Hospital in London, Wakefield’s findings could not be replicated.  His study was later retracted from the Lancet where it was originally published.

retracted-lancet-218x300

The doctor’s troubles did not end there, a paper in the Journal of Molecular Pathology written by Wakefield in 2002, was found to be critically flawed.  A recent study in the British Medical Journal found no rise in incidence of autism in children who received MMR as compared to those who did not. The authors also showed that in autistic children (both ASD and classical) the age at which a child received MMR did not affect the age at which the diagnosis of autism was made.

So why then do some parents so vehemently claim that the MMR vaccine caused their child’s Autism?  Autism is most often first identified in toddlers aged 18-30 months.  Since the MMR vaccine is administered just before this peak age, it causes some parents to link the two together.  There is no medical evidence to support this.  Extensive reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conclude that there is no proven association between MMR vaccine and autism. Dr. Wakefield has since lost his license to practice medicine.

So what does all this mean to the anti-vaxers? Are they changing their stance?  No, they are not and they are just as steadfast in their decision not to vaccinate.  Many claim that the diseases that the vaccines have eradicated are not that serious. Really?  This assumption is based on what?  Their opinion?  The AAP does not take the stance that the diseases are harmless.  In fact they warn parents of the risks and urge them to vaccinate their children.  Some pediatricians are refusing to treat the children of parents who refuse to vaccinate.  They do not want their patients to be exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases in the waiting rooms.  There are also many calling for a ruling that unvaccinated children not be allowed to attend public school.

I wonder what these parents are going to think in 15 or so years from now when their daughters and sons are dating and moving toward marriage.  Have they thought that their sons could contract mumps and be sterile?  Or that their grandchild may suffer debilitating birth defects or be stillborn because their mother contracted measles during pregnancy?  Have they thought that far ahead, or do they plan to rush out and try to get their child exposed to these illnesses so they have natural immunity?

Will their pregnant daughters live in constant fear of contracting Rubella?  Will they suffer the grief of losing their baby or caring for a child with severe birth defects stemming from a medical decision based on flawed science?  Will their daughters rush out and get immunized to protect themselves after seeing the results of primary Rubella infection in unvaccinated pregnant friends and family members? Who knows what they future will hold for them.  It’s scary to think about.

While many are still touting unfounded fears linking vaccines to autism, Autism Speaks chief science officer Rob Ring, has released a statement saying vaccinations cannot cause the disorder — and telling parents to vaccinate their children.

So why do they say the measles is a harmless childhood illness?  The majority in the anti-vax movement were born after the vaccine, so they have no first-hand experience.  Prior to the vaccine, measles killed 500 people a year in the U.S.  Measles infection caused 48,000 people a year to be hospitalized and 4,000 experienced encephalitis, a dangerous condition that causes the brain to swell and caused 400-500 deaths.

Measles is one of the most infectious diseases because it’s airborne and lingers in the air causing it to spread quickly.  People can spread the disease for four days before they develop any symptoms. Highly contagious, 90% of people not immune will contract the virus if exposed.

So how do you feel on the issue?  Let me know, but please keep your comments respectful.

go vaccinate your children

Message To The Oversharers- Thanks So Much For Not Sharing!

Facebook Thumbs Down

Did any of your friends post that powerless legal notice on their Facebook timeline to protect their copyright and privacy rights?  I’m sure you know some that did. You know what I find ironic about that?  They are the very same friends posting pictures on their timeline that I would like to be protected from!  They think just about every life situation calls for a quick smartphone pic and upload to all social media accounts.

I don’t know if the oversharers understand,  the few minutes I spend scrolling through my news feed are accompanied with a cup of coffee.  I  don’t want to see how your C-section scar is healing or the 42 staples in your husband’s leg.

No to compound fractures.  I don’t want to see how you severed your finger opening a can of corn.  I will pass on the chance to see your tibia sticking through your skin following your fall  on the ice. I know your killing time waiting for the ambulance, but please, the visual is not necessary.

I  don’t want to diagnose your mystery rash or see the contents of your new baby’s diaper, nor do I want to see your just delivered placenta.  Please spare me the dismembered rodents your cat brought you, parasites in tuna cans, your bloody nose or the gash you’re taking your child to the ER for.

Oversharing Meme

Come on now people! If you must share that kind of stuff, it needs to have a cover and disclaimer that the following image may not be suitable for all audiences. Then those truly interested in seeing how you just lost the nail on your big toe, can click to view.

Really, I can’t even imagine what it will be like 5 years from now.  Will you ask the nurse if she can take some video with your iPhone as you’re wheeled down the hall to have your gall bladder removed?  At least a few Instagram pics, she should be willing to do that.

How about we ask ourselves if we really need to share the things we do?  Could we do that before we post them and send them streaming though our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest accounts?

Until they come up with the cover and disclaimer, how about asking who ever would like to see the stitching of your perineum to send you a private message . Then you can send them the link to the YouTube video.

Thanks so much for not sharing.

Trio of Peanuts Classic Movies, Remastered on DVD Giveaway & Printable Coloring Page

I absolutely love the Peanuts gang.  I always have and my kids do too.  I loved watching their full length movies as a kid and now that joy can be shared any time.  Three Classic Peanuts full length movies, Race For Your Life Charlie Brown, A Boy Named Charlie Brown and Snoopy Come Home are remastered on DVD and available for purchase Tuesday February 10th!

Peanuts Movies

A Boy Named Charlie Brown

A boy named charlie brown

Join Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy and the whole Peanuts gang in their very first big screen adventure! This movie follows Charlie Brown to the streets of Manhattan after he qualifies as a contestant in the National Spelling Bee. Poor Linus in a supportive effort to bolster Charlie Brown’s shaky self-confidence, lends him his treasured security blanket.  However, when Linus finds out Charlie Brown lost it, he is the one who needs help.  Nearly passing out from withdrawal and anxiety, poor Linus is beside himself.  What an adventure and you know at the end, Lucy will say, “That Blockhead!”  Charles M. Schulz and Bill Melendez weave a world made of witty dialogue, magical security blankets and bright-eyed beagles, all set to an Academy Award®-nominated score by Rod McKuen and Vince Guaraldi.

Snoopy Come Home

Snoopy Come Home

I think this is my absolute favorite Peanuts movie.  Who can forget when Snoopy and his best friend Woodstock set off to visit Snoopy’s first owner Lila in the hospital.  Poor Snoopy must hear “NO DOGS ALLOWED” more times than he can even remember being tossed out of libraries, hospitals, buses and more.  The Peanuts gang is going frantic trying to find the beloved pooch and bring him home.  My favorite part is when Snoopy and Woodstock are mistaken as a stray sheepdog and parrot by a little girl who is determined to make them her pets.  After giving Snoopy a sanitizing bath and putting Woodstock in a parrot cage she dresses Snoopy in a dress and sits him down for a tea party.  Snoopy is less than impressed and must come up with a way to get himself and Woodstock out of there.  In the end it is a heartwarming story showing there really is no place like home!

Race For Your Life Charlie Brown

Race for Your life Charlie Brown

Ah, the joys of camp: The fresh air! The lousy chow! The obnoxious kids from that other tent! But Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, Woodstock and all the rest are ready to face whatever camp throws at them. And when the day of the Big Rafting Race comes around, they’ll fearlessly take to the water, pitting the boys against the girls – and Snoopy and Woodstock against all of them –as they face raging rapids, wild weather, and sneaky sabotage from a bevy of bunkhouse bullies. Teamwork, courage and leadership are the keys to success. Will Charlie Brown have what it takes to be a leader?

For six seasons, the groundbreaking television landmark, THE WONDER YEARS — named by TV Guide as one of the “Top 20 Shows of the ’80s,”–captured the angst of growing up in suburban middle-class America in the late ’60s, as seen through the life and times of Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage). Audiences eagerly followed his evolution as a typical teenager who remembered every moment of his transition from childhood with excruciating detail and remarkable hindsight.

In THE WONDER YEARS: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON, the next retail installment from StarVista Entertainment/Time Life, Kevin confronts the day-to-day pressures of junior high school life: kids don’t know what they want, and the girls are just as confused as the boys.  On the home front, older brother Wayne (Jason Hervey) continues his bullying ways, but Kevin fights back and grows some backbone.  However, his inner strength is tested when he participates in a class walkout to protest the Vietnam War, and joins his pals Paul Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano) and Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar) to stop developers from destroying Harper’s Woods, the site of many happy childhood memories.

Staten Island Chuck or Punxsutawney Phil? Who Should I Believe? #GroundhogDay

It’s Groundhog Day! Living in New York but close to the boarder of PA, it’s hard to know which groundhog to trust.  Do I listen to Staten Island Chuck or Punxsutawney Phil?

This morning Staten Island Chuck, in a new Plexiglas enclosure made his prediction. Chuck said we would have an early spring. I want to take the word of  Chuck, really I do, but I saw some shadows under him on the video replay.  The prediction of early spring is a bit ironic on the day of the first major blizzard we have seen this year.

staten Island Chuck

It is snowing like crazy outside right now, so Chuck’s prediction was very welcome, not sure how realistic though.  However, I decided to embrace Chuck’s prediction.  That was until Punxsutawney Phil had to see his shadow and predict 6 more weeks of winter.  I should share that old Phil has quite a track record of calling for more winter, he has predicted more winter 102 times and early spring a measly 17 times.  Chuck has a track record of being right for the last 5 years.

punxstawney phil groundhog

So while I want desperately to believe Chuck, that negative Nelly Phil is probably right.  On a side note the new enclosure for Chuck was thought to be a safer alternative given what happened last year when Mayor de Blasio dropped Charlotte (the unlucky Chuck stand in), several feet.  Poor Charlotte died a week later of internal injuries, however the Staten Island Zoo has not officially declared that it was a result of the fall.  Come on now, we all know that Mayor de Blasio has Charlotte’s blood all over his hands.  Speaking of hands, back in 2009 Chuck bit then Mayor Michael Bloomberg on the hand.

Not to throw any more puns in but back to the question at hand. Who do I believe, fellow New Yorker Chuck or my friend in Pennsylvania Phil?  Phil or Chuck, Chuck or Phil?  I think I will go with Phil and hope to be pleasantly surprised to learn that Chuck was right.  I just can’t get those shadows I saw under Chuck out of my mind.

What do you think?  Let me know who you think is right.

Ditch The Ick with New Dry Sprays #TRYDRY

Have you ever been getting dressed to go out and you put a shirt or dress over your head,  pull it on and just as you look in the mirror, your see it, icky white antiperspirant marks.  You run to the bathroom to wash it off, but it usually either gets worse or comes back when dry.  Even when I am fully aware and try to make sure not to do this, it happens.  Then, I am left scrambling for something else to wear or wearing a jacket or sweater to cover the icky smears.

Unilever New Dry Spray Antiperspirants

If you can relate to my story above, you might be glad to know that NEW Dry Spray Antiperspirants from Degree Men, Degree Women, Dove, Dove Men+Care and Axe, are available at Walmart.  These deodorants go on dry, no icky wet spay running down but totally dry.  If you click on the link above you can even see a video showing you how the technology works.  Now you don’t need to change your outfit at the last minute or cover up because the spray is invisible on you and everywhere else!  Dry Sprays also keep you fresh and dry for up to 48 hours so you can be confident even in situations that make you sweat.  So, are you going to Ditch The Ick?
