Say & Pray Devotions for Little Ones-#Giveaway #SayandPray #FlyBy

As we move into the holiday season, I want to share a great gift idea for little ones. Say & Pray Devotions: First Words, Stories, and Prayers  is a nice, sturdy board book by bestselling children’s author Diane Stortz. This book is a perfect beginner devotional for little ones learning words. What is especially nice, is that this book not only teaches words but helps teach kids about learning and following Biblical principles.

say-and-pray-book

The fun style of artwork and educational elements that were in Say & Pray Bible are in Say & Pray Devotions. Teaching the basics of identification and comprehension while sharing Biblical principles for life is easy with this book. Little ones love saying all the words that represent the things they see on each page. This method of associating the word for the item helps with learning sight words which in turn develops their earliest reading skills.

We are adding this to Mommy Ramblings’ 2016 Holiday Gift Guide. If you would like to purchase the book, you can do that HERE. We also have a giveaway below where you can enter for a chance to win a copy of this great book for little ones.

Do You Feel Like You Are Failing As A Parent? You Are Not Alone!

Raising children is not for the faint of heart. Have you ever felt overwhelmed, frustrated to the point you lose your temper and yell or scream at your kids? Do you feel at your wit’s ends fighting the same battles, day after day with your children? Is it hard for you to wrap your mind around how they cannot stop doing the things that are getting them in trouble?

frustrated-child

No matter what you do, the same behavior is repeated again and again. Does it leave you so frustrated that you count the hours until bedtime? Do you feel guilty for sometimes not wanting to be around your kids because of how they behave? Do you feel terrible for this and feel you are a failure as a parent? Do you think you must be doing something wrong?

You don’t have to tell me the answers to these questions. If you are a parent, it is safe to say that you nodded your head in agreement to most of these things, maybe even all of them. I want to tell you, that it is okay, you are not the only one. We will fail as parents, many times.

I picked up a really good parenting book the other day. The book is titled, Parenting: 14 Gospel Principals That Can Radically Change Your Family. The author, Paul David Tripp, is the executive director for the Center for Pastoral Life and Care in Fort Worth, Texas. More than that, he is a dad, a dad who has felt those same things.

parenting-book

I will admit when I picked up the book, I expected it to be preachy and written by a man who was a “perfect” parent, who would tell me everything I was doing wrong. I could not have been more wrong. Right from the Introduction, I saw this was a parent I could relate to, one that struggled in the same ways I did. Nothing was sugar-coated, he was real and the pages are full of wisdom. It is real, he writes about situations of parents who are struggling through parenting. If you are like me, you may find their stories very familiar. Sometimes it is nice to know we are not alone.

frustrated-child-crying

One of the things I think will resonate with most parents is the chapter on authority. The author says to never exercise your authority over  your child in an angry, impatient, abusive or selfish way. This means, you do not let your anger at your child’s disobedience control you so you do things you should not. For example, it means that you do not pinch, poke, slap, yank or shove your child. It also means that you do not combine your discipline with berating, condemning or demeaning talk. That means you don’t say things like; “What are you, stupid?” “I can’t believe that you’re my daughter!” and other similar phrases.

mother-angry

He does not say this as a perfect parent who has never done this but as one who openly admits doing this to his son after a particularly grueling day. He admits his shortcomings but lets us know that through God’s grace we can always start new. Facts are, we will fail many times as parents and that is okay, we don’t have to feel guilty because we have that grace.

parenting

The chapters are the 14 Gospel Principals as they apply to parenting; Calling, Grace, Law, Inability, Identity, Process, Lost, Authority, Foolishness, Character, False Gods, Control, Rest and Mercy. The author’s favorite passage in the Bible about parenting is one you might not expect. It is one of the final commandments Jesus made to his disciples.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and          make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,                teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always, to the end of the                age.” (Matt. 28:18-20)

There is so much in this book that is just profound and really hit home for me. You can read an excerpt HERE or listen to an audio click HERE. I hope you check it out and let me know what you think. You can also enter to win a copy below in our giveaway.

This Elephant Can Help Your Child Fall Asleep-#Giveaway

Do you ever feel like you are fighting a losing battle trying to get your kids to sleep? If you are like most parents, you probably do some of the time. I recently found a book by Carl-Johan Forssén Ehrlin, a behavioral scientist who is also a life coach and leadership trainer. Carl-Johan has combined all these skills and experiences in developing the techniques in The Little Elephant Who Wants To Fall Asleep. This book is his follow-up to his #1 International bestseller, The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep.

the-little-elephant

The Rabbit Who Wants To Fall Asleep was a runaway success, exceeding 1.6 million copies and widespread media attention for its reported success in lulling children to sleep by employing positive-reinforcement techniques to promote relaxation.

The Rabbit garnered coverage far and wide for its reported success in helping children fall asleep using relaxation techniques. The New York Times featured the book in the “Letter of Recommendation” column back in April, with the writer stating: “A book whose powerfully soporific effects my son is helpless to resist.”

The Elephant Who Wants To Fall Asleep has the same objective of lulling children to sleep and improving families’ bedtime routines using all-new child-tested, parent-approved techniques. Beautifully illustrated by Sydney Hanson,  this book is recommended for ages 3-7. There are prompts in the book where you insert your child’s name into the story.

The book follows Ellen the Elephant on her journey through a magical forest that leads to sleep. Along the way she meets different creatures and has soothing experiences that are designed to help children relax and slip quickly into sleep. Ehrlin even gives tips for how to use the techniques successfully to help children get to sleep.

How To Help Your Child Spend #EveryDayWithGod-#Giveaway #FlyBy

With all of the negative messages that our kids are exposed to every day, it is nice to find ways to bring positive, spiritual and inspirational words into their lives. I was so happy to find a great book that does that and is on a level my little ones can understand.

Every Day With God is the newest 365-day devotional from VeggieTales. It is a book that can be read together and older kids can read alone. There are 2 versions, one for boys and one for girls. The updated content and art in this new version make the book even better!

veggie-tales-boys

Every day they can open the book to find a Bible verse, short devotion, thought of the day and a prayer. Through this book, kids can learn more about God as it helps them develop a habit of taking time each day to keep God close. More than that, the pages are full of words that can speak right to a child’s heart.

veggie-tales-girls

The words can calm an anxious child, give courage to a fearful child, lift the spirits of a child who feels down and more. Knowing that God has their back and will always be with them is very comforting in a world that can be very cruel. As children grow they face many things that can really hurt them and this book can help them to know,  they are special and God created them perfectly.

When we read it aloud with our kids it can help spur thoughtful conversation. I like that I can quickly find the right verse to speak to a particular issue that might be needed. It is also a wonderful gift for any child and one that carries so much meaning. We will be adding this book to our 2016 Holiday Gift Guide which will be live next week.

Baby, Baby! Lets Baby See Who God Loves #BabyBaby #FlyBy #Giveaway

It is never too early to read to your kids. I started to read to mine in utero. I even had that Dr. Seuss book that was made to be read to your unborn child. When they are born and as they grow, keep reading to them. Sometimes those eager little hands can wreak havoc on the pages of books. As a book lover, that stage made me nuts. I soon learned sturdy board books were the option for us.

I want to share a great board book with you today. Baby, Baby! by Diane Stortz and illustrated by Allie Busby is a short rhyming poem book that celebrates the discovery and wonder that fill baby’s days. At the end there is a special reminder that Baby is always loved by God. This sweet book  is perfect to add to any new baby gift or first birthday present. With the holidays fast approaching it would make a nice little Christmas gift for your baby or one that is close to you.

The book features such adorable illustrations of babies doing all kinds of things from riding in the stroller to banging on pots and pans. At the end a baby safe mirror is on the page to show baby who it is that God loves. Babies love to look at themselves and they will have so much fun seeing their reflection in this book.

What’s It Like To Go Time Traveling With a Hamster?

I love reading aloud with my kids. This summer we had the chance to check out Time Traveling With A Hamster by Ross Welford.

time-traveling-with-a-hamster-cover

This book is packed with adventure and time travel. 12-year-old Al Chaudhury’s dad died when he was just 8 years old. On Al’s 12th birthday he received  a pet hamster, a letter from his dad. The letter directs Al to their old house where he will find a time machine. The time machine is an ancient Apple laptop and a metal wash basin.

His father’s letter contains a mission that will require Al to travel back to 1984 and save his father’s life. You see there was a go-kart accident when he was 12 that is the cause for his death at age 39. If Al can go back in time and prevent that accident, he can change the outcome of events that happened after. Al is given a choice of accepting the mission or not and you can bet Al accepts. Time travel is not easy and Al finds out that going back in time 30 years requires more than courage and imagination. It requires lying to his mom, stealing a moped, setting his school on fire and keeping his pet hamster safe through it all.

This book makes a great read aloud book you can read a chapter at a time with your kids or one that older kids can read on their own. It is a really fun book to read together and leads to lots of great conversations afterward.

Ross Welford worked as a business journalist before becoming a freelance writer and television producer. He has worked on shows such asThe Big Breakfast, The Morning, and Bridezillas. This is his first novel. Follow Ross on Twitter.

So are you excited about this new book? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

#TheBiggestStory Now on DVD & Available as an Audio Book-#Giveaway #FlyBy

Kevin DeYoung’s book, The Biggest Story shares an exciting journey through the Bible. Starting in the Garden of Eden and ending with Christ’s resurrection and what that means for all of us. Now that book and the beautiful illustrations have been adapted into an animated short film available on DVD.

the-biggest-story-dvd

I was amazed the other night as I watched this with my kids, who sat there with their eyes glued to the screen, how quickly this film took us through the Bible. I think it is great because kids are captivated and do not grow tired as they watch it. It reinforces and connects the stories in the Bible and presents them in a way that kids can understand. It is also an excellent springboard that parents can use to elaborate on particular stories to get kids talking and thinking about our faith. Would be great to show in Sunday School as well.

There is also an audio book on CD that is narrated by Kevin DeYoung who is not only the author but the senior pastor of the University Reformed Church in East Lansing, MI. Kevin and his wife Trisha are the parents of seven children.

How To Live The Life You Never Expected- #lifeweneverexpected #FlyBy #Giveaway

As we go through life, I have found that many things we worry or have anxiety about never happen. Then sometimes in life something totally unexpected, the curve ball hits us, and knocks us for a loop. It was that way when my teenage son was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

It was completely unexpected and certainly not anything the surgeon who removed his enlarged lymph node even felt was a remote possibility. When she called that morning it was obvious she was as shocked with the pathology report as I was. Thankfully my son is a survivor and his cancer was caught so early that it did not show on the Cat Scan or tests he had prior to the removal of the lymph node. I was very aware after his diagnosis how life can turn on a dime at any instant.

Life We never expected cover

Andrew and Rachel Wilson were hit with something unexpected that turned their lives upside down when both of their children were diagnosed with regressive autism. It was not something they thought was in the realm of possibilities either when they started a family.

This book takes a very honest look at what it is like for them raising two special needs children. The highs and lows, coping with all kinds of suffering, their personal stories and the encouragement that keeps them going that is rooted in the truth of God’s word.  Andrew and Rachel focus on lessons they learned when fighting for joy and thriving in the midst of trials. They focus on how Christ, the One who promises to make all things new has been such a support to them on this journey.

the life we never expected back cover

The authors tell it like it is, this book is raw and very helpful in showing the very real side of raising children with challenges. Even if you do not have a special needs child, this book is powerful in helping you to understand the trials and suffering your family members or friends may be facing with their child. It can help you be a support to them and lend them compassion and comfort in weak times. I think everyone can benefit from reading this book.

You can find this book is available on Amazon. For a chance to win a copy, just enter the giveaway below.

“Would A Worm Go On A Walk?” #Giveaway

We are a family of book lovers and reading aloud to me kids is a very special time that we all treasure. Worm on a Walk by Hannah C. Hall is a creative and funny picture book that all animals are uniquely created by a loving and wise God.

worm on a walk

Would a worm go on a walk, if you could lead him down the street?

Would he wear his tiny tennies, if he had four worm-sized feet?

Would a worm go on a walk?

No.

No matter how he tries, worms weren’t made for walking and they don’t like exercise.

The whimsical illustrations and fun text make it easy to teach young children that God created all creatures and children too with wonderful qualities and unique strengths. Our kids loved this book and I can tell it will be a favorite. What I like best is it lets them feel that everyone is loved and special, even a worm.
About the author:
Hannah C. Hall is the author of best-selling children’s books, including God Bless You and Good Night and God Bless Our Christmas, as well as an award-winning blog, HannahCHall.com. Hannah lives in Prairie Grove, AK with her husband, Josh, a worship pastor, and their four children.
