Greenbuds Primrose Deluxe Organic 2 in 1 Crib Mattress Review & Toddler Pillow Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

I recently connected with Greenbuds and they sent me a Primrose Deluxe Organic 2 in 1 Crib Mattress to review.   Greenbuds Primrose Deluxe Organic 2 in 1 Crib Mattress is designed with your child’s health, safety, and comfort in mind. The inner mattress core consists of 3″ of the purest, all natural Coconut Coir, providing a very firm support layer for infants, while another 1″ layer of all natural latex acts as a firm, yet more conforming sleep surface for your active toddler. The latex and coconut coir are encased in an Organic Cotton Cover Quilted with 100% Pure Organic Wool, which is removable, washable, and interchangeable. The wool acts as a Natural Water Barrier, and Fire Block, which are only some of its natural advantages.

I was immediately impressed with the cover on this mattresses, I truly have never seen anything like it.  The mattress has a bit of weight to it, definitely not flimsy.  It has two different sides, one for an infant and one for toddler.  After removing the plastic we tried this out in our son’s crib.  He quickly settled in at bedtime and slept extremely long the next morning.  I am not kidding, when I tell you that this morning when I heard him and went to get him up for the day he told me he did not want to go downstairs just yet. He then proceeded to snuggle up and rest for a bit.  I have never seen him do this so I am thinking this is one comfortable mattress and they should look into expanding to an adult line.  I am thrilled to know that the mattress and everything in it is all natural.  I worry more and more about the chemicals we are exposed to and have become very diligent in trying to eliminate as many as I can.  Given that a baby and toddler spends quite a few hours sleeping, it is important that they be on a healthy and non-toxic mattress.  Regular cotton mattresses are produced from cotton sprayed with pesticides, very often mixed with vinyl or other synthetic materials, Organic plants are free of bug repellents and harmful chemicals: the cotton that is used inside Greenbuds mattresses is completely pesticide free.

Aside from having your child inhale the toxic fumes straight off the mattress and having the risk of exposing them to respiratory tract inflammation and many other allergy and health concerns, these toxins create chemical emissions that get stronger with time. These harmful off-gases permeate throughout the room, causing further contamination to our environment. Various childhood disorders have been directly linked to those chemicals that children have been exposed to from birth.  Other chemicals and materials, such as formaldehyde, polyurethane, and pesticides and herbicides, used in the production of the mattresses are just as dangerous. Formaldehyde irritates the skin, eyes, nose and throat and can cause cancer as well. People with asthma are particularly sensitive to formaldehyde particles in the air. Polyurethane is not a natural product. It is produced through the combination of harsh and powerful chemicals, and has been known to increase irritation and decrease airflow in rodents. Pesticides and herbicides were created with a lethal purpose: to kill pests, insects and weeds. Eaten or merely inhaled, they can actually alter our DNA, and thereby cause cancer. They can also trigger ADD, mental illnesses, behavioral problems, and autoimmune disorders, as well as damage the central nervous systems

I breathe easier knowing my baby is sleeping on a natural organic mattress and so does my son. Greenbuds has a complete line of mattresses, mattress protectors and sheets for toddler beds, cribs, cradles, bassinets, mini-cribs and round cribs. Greenbuds also carries very popular toddler pillows.  If you are looking for all natural, quality constructed mattresses and bedding for your child, then take a look at Greenbuds, you will be glad you did.

I Wear Violet For My Son!!!

Well, this Mommy is going to talk about some very serious stuff.  A lot of you who follow my blog are aware that my teenage son was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on June 30, 2011.  The diagnosis was a complete shock since we had been told over and over it was nothing.

This all started in January of 2011, driving him home from school, he told me that he wanted to get this lump in his neck checked. We both assumed it was just a swollen gland but he was hyper aware with his aunt just having been diagnosed with breast cancer.  So we made an appointment at the ENT and we began months of going back and forth, starting antibiotics for a couple of weeks in case it was an infection, then a CAT Scan, and we were told that because it does get smaller and the way it looks on the CAT Scan that it does not appear to be anything serious. So we continued going every couple of weeks for another assessment.  The doctor was more afraid of operating because she said it could cause damage to his facial nerves, so she was trying the wait and see and based on the scan and the fact that it would sometimes shrink to almost nothing.

Winter turned to spring and she finally thought we should get a second opinion. We went to another ENT who felt the same about that scan results, she suggested some blood work to rule out Cat Scratch Fever and Mono.   His blood work came back fine so then she sent us for a needle biopsy.  We were called with the results and they said they were normal.  At this point she thought we should have the surgery to remove the lump but that it was not a serious thing.

So the third week of June, Michael and I went to the hospital.  His surgery was supposed to be over in about 45 minutes but as it neared an hour and a half, a nurse came out to talk to me.  She told me that nothing was wrong but the doctor wanted me to know the reason the surgery was taking longer, was that the nodule was in a delicate area behind the salivary gland and it is requiring more time to remove because of where it is located.

Thirty minutes later the doctor came out and took a seat next to me.  She emphasized that the only reason the surgery took so long was due the delicate area she was removing the lymph node from. She said it looked fine and she did not think it was anything serious. She said we would have the pathology results in about a week. We laughed, talked about the summer,, and then I was allowed to see Michael in recovery.  He was doing well and just wanted to go home.  After about an hour or so we were released and we both left with a great sense of this ordeal finally being over.

A week later, when my husband woke me with the words, “Michael has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma” I knew I was still dreaming.  As the words kept repeating in my head, I soon saw I was very much awake and my husband was really here talking to me.  The doctor that operated on him, had just called.  She was shocked as can be and reassured my husband and then Michael that the prognosis is very good and she would get us right in to see an Oncologist.

My head was swirling, a million thoughts were running through my mind.  I was in shock and utter disbelief.  We did not have any history of this in our family, how could they have not seen anything from the CAT  Scan, needle biopsy, how could this be?  Then thoughts of Curb Your Enthusiasm, came to my mind and Larry talking about the good Hodgkin’s.

We were able to get an appointment for that afternoon and I know I was on autopilot.  Michael and I drove to the doctor’s office, it was the most beautiful afternoon, bright blue sky and brilliant sunshine.  This is not a day you find out your son has cancer.  We joked and laughed on the ride down showing us clearly that laughing and crying are more similar emotions then you would ever think.  Michael had a great attitude, he was upbeat and we even shared a laugh talking about that Curb Your Enthusiasm episode on the way down.

We saw the doctor and he explained that Michael has a very “good” Hodgkin’s and that given it was not detected with any of the testing he had, that it was caught very early. He said our next step was some more blood work and a PET Scan.  We had to talk about the treatment options.  He said if it was stage 1, he would probably only need radiation but he may need radiation and chemo in which case we would have to talk about banking his sperm since there is a chance that the chemo could cause sterility.

After the PET Scan this wonderful Oncologist called us that night to tell us it was clear and left a message about it on our answering machine.  We went back a few days later and he said the results were clear and the only area of uptake was right where he had the nodule removed and that was due to scar tissue.  He told us that many doctors would not even go ahead with radiation based on these results but that we should see a Radiation Oncologist and he suggested a course of radiation on that area just to make sure if there was anything left it would be attacked and destroyed.  The good news was he would not need chemo, would not have to bank his sperm and he should have little discomfort from the treatments.  So after meeting with the Radiation Oncologist a few hours later, we signed on for 17 days of radiation.

Before the treatments could begin, a special mask had to be made of Michael’s face and neck. Then a team of Radiation Oncologists would determine the exact points the radiation had to be directed at.  After this was determined,  the treatments could start.  So for most of July and August every weekday we drove a long way for a few minutes of treatment.  The facility and staff were the best you could ask for.  They took Michael under their wing and every time we walked through the doors the other patients would take a deep breath and many times they would ask me what he had and remark about how young he was, they also told me they would pray for him.

Everyday we would wait with the same patients and you kind of form a family.  I even met two of my neighbors who were undergoing treatment which made me hyper aware of how many lives are affected by Cancer.  Toward the end of August we were finished with treatment and  the outlook was great. We would return in 2 months for a follow-up and a PET Scan at 3 months.  When we went back in to see our beloved Radiation Oncologist 2 months later he assured us that Michael was cured.  He even said that next month, we would not have to drive all the way back for the PET Scan results because he knew they were going to be clear.  We could opt just for a phone call, which we did.

So on December 1st we drove to the hospital for a PET Scan.  I tried calling Friday for results but they were not in, which I found a little odd given the first time how quickly they were read.  By Monday mid-morning I called again and told they had still not received them back but they would call me soon.

About an hour later, another Radiation Oncologist called me. Michael’s regular doctor was on vacation. He took forever to get to the point, but finally told me there was something suspicious on the PET Scan. Hearing those words, my heart seemed to stop.  This was hitting me harder than the original diagnosis, which I think was due to the fact that I was in complete shock then. Now, after undergoing the radiation treatments which were voluntary, and a prophylactic measure, hearing this news was devastating!

I was in disbelief, the Radiation Oncologist said he talked to Michael’s Oncologist and they were expecting my call and would get me right in.  They had Wednesday morning at 8 am as the soonest we could come in.  How was I going to go from now until Wednesday morning?

I was told that he would be examined and if anything was felt in that area he would be sent for a biopsy, if nothing was felt,  he would probably be sent for a repeat PET Scan in a few weeks and followed closely.  When calling the Oncologist, I just lost it, thankfully Michael was not home to see me.  It was really the first time I felt terrified, and it finally hit home that my son has Cancer.

I did wonder if the suspicious area could still be the scar tissue and that is what I am holding on to. However, if that was the case why didn’t the Radiation Oncologist mention that? Why did the Oncologist not call me the way he did with the results like before? Why did he want to sit down with Michael and his parents and go over everything? If I think too much about those questions, I will become paralyzed with fear. I can only pray it is scar tissue, pray that Michael will not have to undergo more surgery, treatments or pain. He has been handling everything so well and actually told me that we will take it as it comes. He is so strong, he is a remarkable young man!

I believe in the power of prayer and that is why I have put this very personal situation out here for anyone to read.  I do this because I consider many of you my friends and because many of you are mothers, and I know as mothers we pray for all children.  I post this because Cancer is not a secret that is whispered, but something that is affecting more lives than ever before.  Maybe I can help someone, maybe someone will reach out to me, maybe this will make a difference.  If I have enemies or stalkers that read this and rejoice that my son has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma then I really need to pray for them because they are very ill themselves and need God to work on their heart.  I know that the majority of my readers will take a moment to bow their heads and say a prayer and it is for that I post this.  God Bless You All!!!

BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper Review and Give-away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

BabyKicks recently sent me their 3g Pocket Diaper to review. The 3g’s side snap closures are longer lasting and designed to prevent wing droop. I’ve never tried this style of diaper before, and was a little confused because the tabs secure behind the front of the diaper, instead of in front. After a little bit of practice, I figured it out and can put the diaper on pretty quickly. It is a one size fits all diaper, so it has snaps on the rise for size adjustment and plenty of size adjustments on the wings. The waterproof outer material of my review diaper is a cool red but they have many different colors available.  The inner fabric and leg holes are lined in fluffy, soft fleece and I was surprised at how it actually worked better at holding in leaks than full waterproof fabric on the leg holes! When diapers have just the waterproof fabric on the leg holes, it can irritate baby’s skin, but the fleece makes it more comfortable, and allows air flow to prevent rashes! It comes with a one size Joeybunz insert that works in all of the size adjustments, just fold it when it’s too long. It is incredibly thin and trim, not as bulky as most, and still is able to absorb and be leak free!

It is a cute diaper overall, with the white on the leg holes and snaps in contrast of the red! It works very well! It held its own through the night, and I know my baby was comfortable because he slept through the entire night! Whether or not that was from the comfort of the diaper, I was pretty thrilled! I will admit that I used this diaper after only one prep wash, even though more washes are recommended before you get the best absorbency. Usually if I try them out before, I get leaks, but my Babykicks diaper didn’t leak even before the rest of the prep washes! I am impressed with the design and quality of this Babykicks Pocket Diaper, and recommend it to all you cloth diapering mamas!
BabyKicks was started in October 2000, and today has products available in over 15 countries! All their diapers are all made of natural and organic fabrics! Gentle on baby, gentle on the environment!

My kids love flashlights, truth be known so does my husband.  We have all kinds of LED flashlights, and the kids love the mini ones, Ethan keeps one on his night side table which makes him feel more secure. Recently I was sent a Bot Headlamp from Princeton Tec to review.  Small, simple, and ready for action, the Bot is the newest and youngest member of  the Princceton Tec family.  Bot is designed with the same ergonomic features of the older members, but with a fun and bright PTec twist. Two Ultrabright LEDs housed in a variety of wild colors will certainly be the center of attention, but look beyond that. The Bot is built with the same ruggedness and reliability as the rest of the headlamps in The Family. Durable plastics, a single arm bracket, and large push button make the Bot sturdy and simple to operate. In addition, the battery compartment on the Bot screws shut to ensure that the batteries won’t be accidentally accessed. PTec reliability, PTec personality – the Bot rounds out The Family in a big way.

We received the blue and red version, it is so colorful and fun especially with the neat head band and three different light modes.  The Bot is great when your child needs a light but wants to keep his hands free for other things.  The Bot is easy to operate even for youngsters and is quality made with a 5 year warranty. Polar Bottle, Insulated Water Bottle Review & Give-Away!!! 3 Winners!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Polar Bottle® is the original insulated plastic sport bottle. It keeps liquids colder longer than other water bottles. Polar Bottle innovated the industry back in 1994 by creating a bottle that would actually keep water cool during any outdoor activity. The bottle has evolved in the years since with brightly colored foil liners and patterns and an innovative removable valve system. Made in America, Polar Bottle is popular throughout the world.  I was recently sent three Polar Bottles to review.  My daughter quickly claimed the 20 oz pink fade bottle which she thinks is perfect for biking.  I took the 24 oz razzle bottle and my husband got the 24 oz Big Bear.  I know how important it is to stay hydrated especially when exercising, but non insulated bottles do not keep your water cold for long, especially in hot weather.  Let’s face it, cold water just tastes better and is refreshing.  Don’t you want a bottle that will keep your water cold?  I do, and I think the Polar Bottle is easy to clean, use and works well.  Polar Bottles can also be customized and limited edition bottles are also available and make great gifts.

Polar Bottle’s double-wall construction of their insulated water bottles creates a thermal barrier of air to keep heat out and cold in.  Foil layers reflect solar rays for additional thermal protection.  Polar Bottle has never used BPA in any water bottles. Even our first water bottles in 1994 were BPA-free.  Kudos to Polar Bottle for always using safe plastic for their bottles even before consumers became conscious of the dangers of BPA.

Songs from the Baobab: African Lullabies & Nursery Rhymes Book & CD Review and Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

I really enjoy enriching my children’s lives by introducing them to different cultures and traditions.  I was recently sent a book to review that allowed me to do just that.  “Songs from the Baobab” is an enchanting book of African lullabies and nursery rhymes.  This hardcover book includes a CD that stores inside the back cover.  Representing 11 languages originating from Central and West Africa and brought to life with lavish illustrations, this collection’s rhymes and lullabies soothe babies and children to sleep as the songs travel from one country and one language to another. Lyrics are reproduced in the original language and translated into English, followed by notes on the origin and cultural context of each song. The accompanying CD features 29 songs from 10 countries—including Rwanda, the Ivory Coast, and Senegal—each one unique in language and sound, recorded with indigenous instruments and exquisitely performed by women, men, and children. This delightful, enchanting production captures the staccato rhythm of the children’s rhymes and the poetry of the language as well as a sense of the heritage and tradition of each culture.

This is a great book to share with your children.  It is an excellent book for little ones who have been adopted from the countries represented, as it helps them identify and know the cultural songs and rhymes that are native to where they were born.  This book and CD are also a great resource to use in school settings and tie in with lessons about different cultures and traditions.  If your family shares their heritage with the cultures in this book you will absolutely love reading and singing the rhymes and songs with your children.

The book features colorful illustrations by Élodie Nouhen as well as full lyrics in the original languages, translated into English. A map and explanatory notes serve to make this an enchanting educational experience for adults as well as children.

Paris-based musician and educator Chantal Grosléziat recorded these pieces with singers from each culture. Paul Mindy arranged each piece with traditional instruments, including the kora, balafon, kalimba and rain sticks. The lullabies and rhymes make frequent references to animals and the natural world. For example, the Central African Republic lullaby “Dunga” urges the newborn to “take your strength from nature.” Family relationships, and in particular the loss of a parent, are find a place in these songs from cultures where disease, famine and war are part of everyday life. A song from Mauritania tells the baby, “your mother has gone to search for jujubes,” and a piece from Guinea evokes the sad fate of orphans, saying “Sali Wonde, nothing is eternal.”

The Secret Mountain is dedicated to the creation of children’s books, videos and music of the highest quality. The French imprint – La Montagne Secrète – is considered to be one of the most original and innovative children’s publishing houses in Canada and France. The company recently made its United States debut with music, DVDs and books.  For more information, visit www.thesecretmountain.com.

This book and CD set makes a great gift this holiday season.  Mommy Ramblings is adding it to our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide.

Hickory Farms Orchard’s Bounty Gift Basket Review!!!

I was absolutely thrilled when Mom Central told me that I was selected for a special blogger review program sponsored by Hickory Farms. The name Hickory Farms conjures up so many great images for me, wonderful gift baskets, holiday gifts, great food, family and friends.  I was sent an Orchard’s Bounty Gift Basket, when the box was opened, I could not believe how beautiful it was.  Everything was packed in a large hand-woven  Peterboro Keepsake basket.  Just seeing that basket told me I was in for a treat.  I wasn’t wrong, the basket was filled with farmhouse cheddar cheese, crackers, summer sausage, crisp delicious Fuji apples, gorgeous large Red D’Anjou and Crown Comice pears and a bag of berry nut bounty.  The first thing I tried were the apples and they were so sweet, juicy and delicious that I wanted to claim them all for myself.  My 2 and 4-year-old could not wait to dive into the Mandarin oranges, my husband opened the berry nut bounty and passed it around.  The pears ripened and you could just smell how great they were going to taste before even taking a bite.  It was not long before the basket was looking empty.  How could it not?  With the great cheddar and crisp apples, summer sausage and crackers there was no denying some healthy snacks.  Even when everything is done, you are left with a great gift.  The large rectangular Peterboro keepsake basket has so many uses and one of my favorites is to bake up some delicious muffins and rolls and line the basket with a large colorful cloth napkin.  Fill that large basket up with the delicious yummy baked good as a complement to a Sunday family breakfast.
