safety1st_logo_trans

The holidays may be over but Winter travel is in full swing.  As the temps get colder many families decide to motor south for some fun in the sun and escape the winter chill.  Schools seem to know this too and many have a winter break carved out for families to do just this.

I thought this post from Safety 1st Consumer Safety Experts on “How to Survive The Holiday With Kids?” would be applicable for any kind of family getaway this winter season.  After reading, be sure and enter the giveaway to win a Safety 1st, Advance SE 65 Air + Convertible Car Seat!

safety 1st-St. Germain Car SEat- Winter Travel

According to AAA last year 94.5 million people were on the roads, train tracks or in the skies during the holiday season.  That’s a lot of people! Then add your own kids into the mix of congestion and for some it can mean holiday headaches.  However, Safety 1st has some tips to help fight some of those headaches this season.

1.      Avoid peak travel days –Try not to fly or drive the days immediately before and after the actual holiday.  Those are the busiest travel days. However, if you fly or take a train you might save money by traveling on the actual holiday, the roads are less congested too.

2.      Prepare your child for the trip – Holiday parties can be overwhelming with sensory overload.  Especially for young children it’s good to talk about the upcoming trip days even weeks in advance.  This will help him or her get excited about the journey.  Show photos of family members or friends your child has not met yet, this way the new face might be a little familiar on arrival.

3.       “Are we there yet?” – To help avoid that dreaded phrase an hour into your six-hour trip reserve a bag just for the kids, include books, toys, diapers a change of clothes and snacks.  Pre-load a tablet or smartphone with kid friendly apps or games. If you are driving keep all necessary items such as wipes, hand sanitizer or tissues easy to reach in a second – there are times you may not want to be digging through the bottom of a bag for such items. The Safety 1st Car Door Sanitation Station is a great solution.

4.      Car Seats – If you are flying check to make sure your car seat is FAA certified. If it’s not clearly labeled contact the manufacture. For parents with older children the Safety 1st BoostAPack can double as a kid survival kit, it’s FAA certified, and will fit in the plane overhead bin.

If you are driving make sure your car seat is installed correctly. If it’s been awhile since you visited a car seat check, it’s recommended to check your seat with a Certified Child Safety Technician in advance of your trip. Safercar.gov is a great resource.

5.      Prepare the guest room – If your child will be sleeping in a Play Yard during the trip, use that for bed or nap time the entire week before. This will help him or her get used to a new sleep environment.  Also if your infant or child sleeps better in a dark room or tends to wake up early with the morning light, bring garbage bags or dark fabric to tape over windows.

Our Summer Journey With Safety 1st!!! #OurSummerJourney

Living in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York is like being on a great vacation all summer.  We live on a lake, and people who live here relish when they can spend a week or two vacation at the lake.  We are so blessed that we live here and get to play here every day!!!

This is what it's like living on a lake in the summer!!! Out with the kids on the Walk On Water Mat and being circled by my cousin and neighbors. #OurSummerJourney

This is what it’s like living on a lake in the summer!!! Out with the kids on the Walk On Water Mat and being circled by my cousin and neighbors. #OurSummerJourney

Besides the lake there is so much to do and we recently took a few day trips that were so much fun!  We went to the Wayne County Fair in nearby Pennsylvania, we gathered rocks as we spent some time on the Delaware River that we will use for a rock painting and landscaping project, we went blueberry picking and made a scrumptious blueberry pound cake.

When we take day trips we are gone all day and the kids like to sleep on the way there and usually fall asleep for the night on the way home.  It is important to me that they are comfortable and safe in the car.  That’s why we love Safety 1st car seats.  The  Advance SE 65 Air+ Convertible Car Seat is safe and super comfy for Luke and he sleeps like a baby in it!  It has a nice big cup holder and it’s a super safe seat that is reinforced with steel.  The Air Protect® advanced cushion system protects his head, where it’s needed most and the GCell HX™ patented foam with hexagonal shapes inside the seat provides superior body protection.  The seat provides full body side impact protection and that gives parents peace of mind!  This seat as well as the new one for Ethan that is just a bit delayed surely make #OurSummerJourney day trips much easier!

We took a great day trip to the Wayne County Fair in Pennsylvania and the kids had an awesome time.  There was a big Monster Truck show and so between the rides, animals, show, food, exhibits and more it was very late when we were driving home.  It is nice that a seat so safe is so comfortable!

StaySharp Commuter Cuff Review and Giveaway!!!

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial. exposed seam logo

My daughter is an active cyclist and so I was thrilled to have her do a review for the StaySharp Commuter Cuff.  Just out of grad school with a new executive job in a metro area she does want to commute from her apartment to work and this cuff is perfect to keep her safe and keep her pants clean and away from her chain and gears.  The cuff also has a reflective stripe trim in back which is another great safety feature.  The cuff is easy to put on and so lightweight and easy to tuck into even the smallest purse or pocket when she removes it.  This is a great safety accessory for the cyclist in your life.

Stay Sharp and Don’t Expose Yourself

Combining a love for accessories with a passion for products that solve problems, Boston based company Exposed Seam offers a StaySharp Commuter Cuff for those who commute on bicycles. No longer necessary are rubber bands, rolled up pants, grease on clothing, or shoe laces caught in chains. StaySharp’s unique shape keeps pants clean and helps keep laces away from your gears and chain – plus riders won’t look like they are digging for clams.

Exposed Seam’s patent pending cuffs are made in the USA, out of Cordura® fabric produced in the USA. They are designed for the right leg, but can be worn on both sides, and its reflective trim on the back seam helps riders stay safe. One size fits most.

StaySharp Commuter Cuffs are available in a variety of stores in the US, Canada, and Australia and online at ExposedSeam.com, Amazon, Square marketplace, and Etsy.

The Creators:
Jonathan and Jenifer Stark began Exposed Seam out of a mutual love of cycling and style.  Jonathan, who has commuted all over Boston by bike for many years engaged Jenifer’s MassArt fashion design skills to solve his constant problem of ruined shoelaces and pants.  Sympathetic to her husband’s plight, the StaySharp Commuter Cuff was born.

The first production run was made right in the couple’s live/work studio at the 300 Summer St. Artist’s Building, and they have since grown their business to enlist the help of a local manufacturing facility in Fall River, MA.  Jonathan and Jen are committed to keeping their cuffs made in the USA.

Jonathan’s background in video development and marketing coupled with Jenifer’s web design and e-commerce skills have also helped make Exposed Seam a home grown venture.  They hope to continue to reach new cyclists each year and spread the word that doing what’s good for your body and the planet never means having to sacrifice your style.

ETY•Kids Safe-Listening Children’s Earphones Review & Giveaway!!!

It’s about children.
It’s about hearing for a lifetime.

etykids-slide5 (1)

I was selected to receive a sample of ETY•Kids safe-listening earphones.  I was really eager to try them because I have not let my youngest kids have earphones or buds yet due to the possibility of hearing loss from turning the volume up to high without me ever knowing.   These headphones prevent that danger by never letting the output get past the safe sound levels no matter if the volume is turned up on the device.  That sure gives this mom peace of mind as a young child just playing around with buttons or dials would not even understand what they were doing.  I tried the earphones with my little guys and they both liked them, they stayed comfortably in their ears and they had a ball using something like that for the first time.  They are definitely recommended by Mommy Ramblings for safe, listening fun!!!

etykids-slide4

Today’s tech-connected kids live in a high-def world. They experience Blu-ray, surround-sound, life-like computer graphics and 3-D movies. They are bombarded by sound from television, toys, game consoles, music players and in-vehicle entertainment systems.

ETY•Kids safe-listening earphones are engineered for safe sound output while maintaining Etymotic’s exceptional sound quality.By controlling earphone sensitivity, it is not necessary to restrict the volume setting on the player.

Sound heard through ETY•Kids earphones will not exceed safe levels, so parents can rest easy. Even at the maximum volume setting on portable players, kids can listen safely for up to four hours per day. And because ETY•Kids earphones block background noise, and provide high-definition sound quality, kids will be able to hear every detail, and won’t complain that the volume is too low.

etykids-slide1

Features

  • For ages 4+ and anyone overly sensitive to loud sound
  • Engineered for safe sound output*
  • High-definition sound experience
  • ACCU•Fit eartips ensure a good fit in small ears
  • CUSTOM•FIT option
  • AWARENESS!® HD for Etymotic for Android Google Nexus 7
Programmable noise-isolation app keeps kids aware of their surroundings
*Assuming 4 hours or less per day listening at full volume.

What can parents do?

Parents choose gear for young children. Many parents understand the importance of limiting sound levels and exposure time, but most are unsure how to manage their kids’ listening. While children are young, one thing parents can influence is the kind of earphones kids use with their portable players. Stock earbuds supplied with portable devices can produce damaging levels of sound. The main reason listeners of all ages turn up the volume is to block out distracting background noise. ETY•Kids earphones seal the ears so volume levels stay safer. With an adequate seal plus the safe sound output of ETY•Kids earphones, parents are assured their kids are listening safely.

Top 10 Things To Know About Sunscreen & Badger Sunscreen Giveaway!!!

badger-logo

Badger sunscreens are consistently top-rated for safety by the Environmental Working Group, and Badger strives to educate consumers on the best ways to stay safe while having fun in the sun. We can offer tips on what to look for, such as broad spectrum protection and non-toxic active ingredients.

Well, it is getting close to summer here in NY finally and with my kids in the water and running around in bathing suits it is also time to protect them from the harmful rays of the sun.  The catch 22 is that many of the sunscreens on the market are full of harmful ingredients and it feels ironic to put something harmful on them to protect them from something harmful.  Even many sunscreens marketed for kids contain harmful chemicals that are not safe for kids.  I am very picky about what I use for sunscreen so I am pleased to let you know about Badger Sunscreens.

BadgerSunscreen

BadgerSunscreen1

BadgerSunscreen2

BadgerSunscreen3

Badger is manufacturer of the #1 selling sunscreen in the US Natural Market. Badger Daily Sunscreens are made from the safest possible, most effective ingredients and always include broad spectrum coverage.  Badger never uses synthetic chemicals, “fragrances”, parabens or GMOs.  Badger is a brand I can feel comfortable about applying on my kids.  My four-year old love the face stick because it is easy for him to apply and as a mom I feel okay when he gets a little more than necessary on because it does not contain nasty chemicals.  The sunscreen is easy to apply and provides great protection, my kids have been very active with it on and it has not failed us even in the water.  If you are looking for safe sunscreen options for your kids, check out Badger.

Top Ten Things to know about Sunscreen Protection:

1. Sunscreens are over-the-counter drugs regulated by the FDA.

2. Most people only apply ½ to ¼ the recommended amount of sunscreen. Applying half the amount of sunscreen needed only provides the square root of the SPF. So a half application of SPF30 only provides an SPF 5.5.

3. The proper dosage of sunscreen is 1.2 ounces, or about a shot glass of sunscreen, to cover an average-size adult body.

4. The FDA recommends broad spectrum sunscreens which protect against both UVB and UVA rays. Sunscreens are only required to protect you from UVB rays in the United States – look for the words ‘Broad Spectrum’ to ensure UVA protection.

5. UVB rays may cause sunburns and skin cancers. UVA rays may cause tanning, premature aging, wrinkles and skin cancers.

6.  The SPF number only tells you how well a sunscreen will protect against UVB.

7.   Sunscreens with lots of natural plant oils and vitamin E are rich in antioxidants, which help mitigate free radicals caused by sun damage.

8. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing into your skin (and bloodstream) while mineral sunscreens work by sitting on top of your skin. This is why dermatologists and the Environmental Working Group recommend mineral sunscreens as the safest option.

9.    Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only two approved mineral active sunscreen ingredients in the US. Zinc oxide is the only single active sunscreen ingredient that provides full broad spectrum protection (from UVA & UVB rays).

10.  Certain sunscreen chemicals have been shown to cause coral bleaching. Mineral sunscreens in a natural base have the least impact on the environment.

Badger is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!  One lucky blog reader will win a tube of ZINC OXIDE SUNSCREEN LOTION – SPF30 ALOE and  a Badger SPORT SUNSCREEN STICK SPF35!  Thank you to Badger for the review sunscreen and for sponsoring this great giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

The Unexpected Green Pan Review!!!

When I came down this morning, my wonderful husband had already cooked the little ones their favorite breakfast of cheese eggs, buttered toast and bacon.  While I was getting my coffee, he told me he used the new Green Pan to cook the eggs.  He said this looking for my approval, wondering if it was okay he cooked in it.  When I told him I had only done the pre-review, he told me he did take pictures of the process.  I asked him for his impressions of the pan and he raved about how well made the pan is and it is very easy to see and feel it is a commercial grade fry pan.  He said it heated very evenly and the eggs cooked so fast.   When he added the cheddar cheese it melted fast and was not sticking to the pan.

The greatest testimonial on the non-stick surface of this pan, is that as I sat down to post this review, I asked my husband if he had cleaned the pan yet.  When he told me he had not, I ran into the kitchen to look at the pan.  There was next to nothing in it and a quick wipe of a towel had it looking brand new.

We are very impressed with these pans and highly recommend them if you are looking for a safe non-stick pan.  Please check their website as they have a wide range of products.  www.green-pan.com  Thank you again Green Pan for making a product I feel confident using around  my family and pets.
