The Smart Weigh To Ship Your Packages! #Giveaway #HolidayGiftGuide

Tis’ the season for sending packages. When you are shipping packages and want to print your labels at home, it is important that you weigh them accurately. If your package weight is off, you will either pay more or risk the package being sent back or sent to your recipient with fees owed.

Some people rely on bathroom scales but they are not made to weigh packages. They also can be highly inaccurate. Do you earn extra income selling on eBay or Amazon? If so, you really need to have something better than a bathroom scale.

I want to share a scale I found to be perfect for all my shipping needs. It is the the Smart Weigh USPS UPS Digital Postal Scale.

The scale can display the weight in kg/g/lb/lb:oz and comes with a 2 year warranty.

I was very impressed with this scale, I weighed a variety of items including my kids and my husband, a new vacuum, a 10 lb bag of sugar and more. It was highly accurate and I like that you don’t have to lean over to see the reading. The display is able to be placed eye level or on a counter so that it is easy to read and not obscured by a package.

I have the protective film on still, it is beautiful stainless steel underneath. The OCD is telling me to leave it on so it stays nice. lol

It is easy to operate and has a beautiful gleaming stainless steel platform. We really like the versatility of the USB cable and the high weight capacity. It is really nice to have a shipping scale with a large weight capacity like that. I can even weigh my dogs on it! We think this scale makes a great gift and are adding it to Mommy Ramblings’ 2016 Holiday Gift Guide!

eBay No Seller Protection Is increasing Buyer Scams

For many years I was a power seller on eBay, that was prior to 2010.  It seems 2010 is when eBay decided t0 stick it to their sellers. They offer No Seller Protection- although they claim to.

ebay-buyer protection 1

A few weeks ago during a decluttering mission, I decided to list some office equipment and supplies that we no longer used.  Most of the items were brand new, the others very barely used.  They were high-end items.  I listed them and the first thing I noticed was the enormous percentage eBay takes as a final value fee, not only on the price of the product but on the shipping price.  When you charge the customer actual shipping, which I did, I lost money.  I believe they must have started doing this because many sellers were trying to circumvent eBay fees by selling the product for less and charging a huge shipping fee.

So the first thing that ticked me off was they were taking a fee of the shipping even though they clearly saw I charged actual shipping as I bought the label through them. Then after they take their percentages, their sister company Paypal takes some more.  The worst part is they offer zero, zilch, nada in the way of seller protection.   We all know about Buyer Beware, but with eBay it’s truly the reverse.  Seller Beware is the caution for sellers on eBay.

Even if a seller says no returns, it means nothing.  A buyer doesn’t  need to  supply any proof to prove items  arrived damaged or not as described.  When I asked eBay about this, a live representative told me that when they required proof of damaged or not as described items it was being abused on both ends.  I could not get her to elaborate but she said that now the buyer just needs to state that the item was not as described or arrived damaged.  After that, eBay will contact the seller and ask them to issue the buyer a prepaid label to return the item.  They give the seller 5 days to do this and if they don’t make another arrangement with the buyer, eBay decides in the buyer’s favor.  Then eBay takes the money from the seller’s Paypal account they already put on hold and return it to the buyer.   Oh and the best part, the buyer at this point does not even need to return the product.

Ebay is now a playground for unscrupulous buyers who have used this “buyer’s protection” to play the game.  They  say a product was damaged, not as described or even stolen. Since the seller is completely ignored, the buyer can send back a similar item they had that was broken.  For instance let’s say the buyer orders a video game that is the same as one they have that’s broken.  When the new game arrives they file a claim that it was broken or does not work.  Ebay jumps in and does what is stated above. Then the buyer has a new game they did not pay for and the seller either has nothing or a broken game. It doesn’t matter if the seller has 40,000 positive feedback and the buyer has no feedback, it’s still decided in their favor.

On the subject of feedback,  sellers can only leave positive or no feedback for a buyer. They can’t leave neutral or negative feedback for any buyer.  So a seller has very little chance of seeing the bad apples when they are bidding.  Now a seller can check feedback that the buyer leaves for others which I did after being scammed by a buyer. Whey I checked I found this buyer had left the same feedback for several power sellers and eBay did not care. He left feedback that the seller was a bad seller selling damaged items and for buyers to beware.  When this was brought to eBay’s attention they said nothing, not a word.

I sent them several emails during the 5 days this case was pending with substantial evidence this buyer was a con artist and not one email was responded to.  5 days later I received the email that the case had been decided in the buyers favor and that the item will not be returned but the buyers money will and so will their shipping.  Okay, so I had been smart and purchased insurance at my expense, the buyer was not charged for it.  I went and filed the claim with USPS who I thought I bought the insurance from.  Well the claim was paid but for $50 when the item was way over that and I had purchased insurance for the full selling price on the item.  When I called USPS, they were very helpful but told me that the $50 is standard that they offer on all shipments and that is when I found out the insurance I bought was not with USPS but another (you guessed it) eBay company. They do not pay a claim the way USPS does, fast and friendly. No, quite the contrary.

the_most_interesting_man_in_the_world ebay

When I called to file the claim, I was told the buyer, yes the buyer, has to respond to an email and state the item he received was damaged.  Well, didn’t he already do that?  No, according to them, his email to me through eBay and one that eBay has do not count.  He has to respond to another email and if he doesn’t the insurance claim will not be paid to the seller.  They will wait 30 days for the buyers response and if there is none the seller can contact the eBay insurance company again and file an appeal.

If the insurance was through USPS I would have a check in my hand.  Not so with eBay.  To say I am disgusted with eBay is an understatement.  The email that says they settled the dispute in the buyer’s favor said a seller  can appeal. So I did, I was on hold for over 30 minutes and when I got through was told that I could not appeal.  Yes, that was it.

So if you are selling on eBay please beware:

They take astronomical feels from the final sale price of your product

They take a fee from the shipping price of your product, so you can’t charge actual shipping because you will shortchange yourself.  Must add handling fee, and don’t worry they will help themselves to some of that too!

Buying a label, if you buy it through eBay or Paypal and want insurance it will be through an eBay company that does not pay the claim unless the buyer does certain things.  Do yourself a favor and buy the label from USPS direct and get the insurance through them too.

Even if you send a perfect product out that is exactly as described and packed well, the buyer can claim it was damaged or not as described.  Buyer will not be required to show a shred of proof.  His or her word is as good as gold with eBay. The choices eBay will give you are to pay for the customer to return the item or let them keep it and to refund the purchase and shipping price to the buyer.  They will not respond to you in any way or  look at any evidence to show the buyer is lying or committing fraud.

Finally  the insurance with what a seller thinks is USPS is very covertly switched to an eBay company. A company that says they will have to wait until the buyer responds to a new email in order to pay the seller back the money they are out.  Funny they don’t just look at the eBay messages to see what the buyer says when they have to pay out the money.  The whole thing is to just find a loophole to not pay.  Funny that sellers can’t put their funds on hold and just pay ourselves in 5 days.

Bottom line is eBay just does not care at all about  sellers.  They seem to forget without sellers there can be no eBay.

A quick Google search shows many power and reputable sellers stating the same thing.  This is one seller who won’t sell on eBay again. If you want to read how many sellers have been wronged, check out this post in the eBay community, or this one, or 1,000 others saying the same thing…eBay screws sellers.  Their new slogan should be: eBay taking buyers protection to a whole new low.

Auctions, Love Them or Hate Them?

auction_gavel

Do you go to Auctions?  I used to go a lot and I had to stop because I was becoming addicted.  I had not been to an auction in about 9 or 10 years until today.  I don’t know what possessed me to go but somewhere, searching something, a few weeks ago, I came across a site called AuctionZip.  This site lets you put in your zip code and do a search in distance of all the upcoming auctions.  Many have picture galleries and I accidentally clicked on one that occurred in December, that had all the Madame Alexander baby dolls brand new from the late 70s.  I was so mad I missed that, it took a couple of days for me to come to terms with it.  Anyway, I saw one for this afternoon about an hour and a half north of me.  Now, if I live in God’s country then an hour and a half north of me is really God’s country.  I think the competition in auctions is much worse the closer to the city you go, so I prefer to go up north or out into the country of Pennsylvania   However, it is getting harder and harder to find anyone that does not know how much something goes for on eBay, and hence harder to find a good deal.

I remember 10 years ago sitting in a small town auction with two older ladies behind me, they had to be in their 70s and as a piece of either pottery or depression glass came up, I heard them whispering what the piece was going for on eBay   It was then I realized the days of the past are over.  I can remember when we came to our house upstate in the summer as a young child, my mother got the auction bug. I was very young but clearly remember attending auctions with her in a huge barn in the next town.  My mother came home with some great finds, like a rickshaw, lots of antique furniture, and more.  I always remember after they auctioned the furniture, they would auction livestock and I always wondered why we could not get some livestock.

What I am struck with the most is so many of the things that are sought after are things my parents had.  Things that my siblings mostly disposed of in a dumpster (after they died) which really upsets me to this day.  At least if it had been given away, but my family and I were on vacation when they did this clean out and if I think about it too much I get violently ill.  So I guess part of me sees some of this stuff and thinks, “Wow, my parents had those tea cups, or those Christmas ornaments from the 1940s etc.”   Maybe I am trying to get a little piece of what they eradicated and hang on to a bit of nostalgia without being a hoarder.

So back to the present, upon getting to the auction site today the street was full of cars even though it was a large building in the middle of farm country.  I saw licence plates from Ohio and since they were going to be auctioning coins for the first 1/2 hour I wanted to think they came for that. It was packed to capacity when I walked in but as they finished the coins some of the collectors left and a few seats opened up.  You could see the hardcore coin collectors with their print out of coins and the same two or three bidders taking everything of value.  They undoubtedly would sell the coins separately on eBay and they knew their prices.

Now, I was not their to buy a lot of junk as I am trying to simplify my life, but I did have a few projects in mind.  I was lucky the other week to find an antique vanity (much like one my mother had) and an antique desk on Craigslist for a song.  I plan to paint the vanity a bright color and use it in a craft room I am planning for my new sewing machine.  So I saw a few other things I would like to try my hand at painting etc.  Last night I made a list of what I wanted, and then did a search online about what they were worth.  When they got to the first thing I wanted, which was what I thought was a child’s youth chair with a pressed back as shown below, I was taken back when the auctioneer said that it did not have the tray and that the owners are going to go and look for it. I don’t know why, but it just made me think I had been wrong or they were wrong, and in the time I was pondering this, the bidding had started, it was up to $25, $27.50, $29, and I just could not bid, not sure why, but I just couldn’t   So it went for $30 or $32 and I was not too upset about not getting it.  Next thing on my list to come up was a wicker child’s rocker,  It just needed some fresh paint and a new cushion.  Well again the bidding started up and the woman behind me started bidding, and it went for $22 or $24 and I had not bid.

This is the chair that I thought was a youth chair and next to it the one that went for $5.

The three chairs I won.

The three chairs I won.

By this time I was wondering what was wrong with me, my search last night told me a chair like that was worth at least $49 but I still could not bid.  So the other little chair I liked came up, I had thought about painting it a nice bright color but it came up so fast and the bid was $5 and it stopped, just as I was ready to bid, it was sold for $5 and that really made me mad.  I do not know whether I just did not feel it, but I just could not bid.  So now I sat and thought to myself, what had I come here for?  Nearly everything on my list was gone and I had not even bid.  Next were some tin noise makers, we had the same ones when I was a kid and I know I have a few from when my oldest kids where young somewhere.  I thought they were cute and that I would be willing to go to maybe $10.  However, it seems others thought they were cute too and  were quickly bid up to $17 or so and I just did not find it worth it, so I passed.  Next was a set of about 18 character glasses.   I was willing to go to like $17 maybe $20 but the bidding went up again and after $24, I lost interest and did not feel it was worth it.

So I know I sound like a dud,  but I tell you, I used to be addicted to auctions and would find no problem bidding until I was the highest bidder on what I wanted and soon had a garage full of stuff I did not really need.  After giving it all away several years ago, I have decided I only want what I indeed love, so I think I am being really good and can tell you there were a few in the crowd that I think may benefit from learning to simplify.  They had some new lots of stuff and the first thing I actually bought were some small LED flashlights for my little guys, they love flashlights.  Then the last thing on my list came up, three little  ladder back chairs that  had perfect rush seats and I thought would make a great project with each painted a different primary color.  The bidding started and I was right in this time and guess what?  I won all 3 for $40 which comes to a little over $13 a chair and I think was a good deal.  That’s all I bought  and I can tell you I did not feel that itch that I had to go to another.  I did see some kind of antique ceiling fan that came out of bar that I truthfully would not give you $5 for go for over $3000, that was fun to watch.  The guy in front of me was bidding like crazy and I wanted to ask him how much it was worth but he left when he lost.  Another tiny, rusty bird cage when for $50 and the auctioneer said it was going for $600 on eBay, I would not give $3 for it.

A football that I would not even touch let alone give you the hefty price it sold for.

Some Art Deco Light Fixtures that went for a pretty price but again that I would not look twice at.

So do you go to auctions?  Do you have auction stories?  I would love to hear them.  I feel they have lost their shine because of eBay and that your real chance of finding a bargain is going to be at a yard sale or your elderly neighbors house, because everyone else seems to know exactly what everything is worth and the prices are ridiculous   I remember going to a yard sale about 10 years ago and seeing something, I bargained with the woman who was elderly and when I did she told me she would not go lower than whatever price because that is what they were going for on eBay   Ugh, this was a tiny town yard sale and this elderly woman knew her eBay   It is going to get harder and harder to find those great finds, like the Annalee dolls I found once brand new with tags being sold for 25 cents each.  The  people having the yard sale said their relative gave them to them and it was apparent they really did not care for them.  She even thought they had some more and if I wanted them, they were mine!  Alas, her daughter could not find them but that was a deal!
