The Smallest Gift of Christmas written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds.

The Smallest Gift of Christmas Book

Roland can’t wait for Christmas Day, and when the morning finally arrives he races downstairs to see what is waiting for him. What he sees stops him in his tracks. Could that tiny present really be what he had waited all year for? It has to be the smallest gift he had ever seen! So Roland wishes for something bigger . . . and bigger . . . and bigger. But he’s still convinced there must be a bigger gift somewhere in the universe. Will he know it when he sees it? Peter H. Reynolds’s spare, free-spirited illustrations and heartwarming text make this be-careful what-you-wish-for story the perfect holiday gift.In Peter H. Reynolds’s whimsical holiday story young Roland learns that more isn’t always better — and rediscovers the magic of home.

Forever written and illustrated by Emma Dodd.

Forever

Featuring stunning, foil-embellished illustrations of a polar-bear family, this book makes a handsome addition to any nursery bookshelf and is the perfect read-aloud for parent-child bonding at bedtime.  How long does a parent’s love last? Forever!

Toys Galore
If you’re game, open up the world’s wackiest toy chest, where anything and everything can turn into nonstop, action-packed fun. Once again, Peter Stein’s playful verse and Bob Staake’s uproarious illustrations come together in an explosion of color and whimsy, while imagination takes center stage as the best toy of all. Toys Galore is one playground you won’t want to miss!  Look out below! Let your creativity soar as toys of all shapes and sizes squeak, zip, and whirl across the page.

Dragonology

Do you believe in dragons? Now, for the first time, the long-lost research of renowned nineteenth century dragonologist Dr. Ernest Drake is presented in all its eccentric glory, happily bridging the gap between dragon legend and fact. The meticulous Dr. Drake assigns Latin names to various dragon species, ruminates on why dragons are able to speak, speculates on how they could fly, and explains the true purpose of their notorious hoarding habits. Here are just a few of DRAGONOLOGY’S fascinating features:

— Novelty item on every spread, including tactile samples of dragon wings, dragon scales, and dragon skin
— Booklet of dragon riddles (indispensable to the burgeoning dragonologist)
— Sealed envelope containing a powerful dragon-calling spell
— Embossed faux leather cover with silver foil, encrusted with three dragon gems

In his afterword, Dr. Drake reveals that one of the crucial goals of dragonologists is to preserve the magnificent creatures of their study wherever possible – a goal this tongue-in-cheek volume most affectionately achieves. An incomparable gift for secret dragonologists everywhere!  For true believers only, a lavishly illustrated reproduction of a legendary volume by the world’s most distinguished dragonologist. Don’t let it fall into the wrong hands!

Candlewick Press, Halloween Triple Treat Book Review & Giveaway!!!

Candlewick Press

If you read my blog, it’s not hard to see that we love books.  I especially love children’s books.  We read a lot in our home and bedtime stories are a favorite time.  Recently I was sent a spectacular set of three Halloween themed books from Candlewick Press.  Vampire Baby, Ghost In The House and Filbert, The Good Little Fiend.

Vampire Baby by Kelly Bennett is the story of a little boy who thinks his baby sister just might be a vampire.  He comes to this conclusion because unlike most babies who sprout their first teeth on the bottom, his little sister sports two sharp canines as her first pearly whites.  The other thing he notices  that might mean baby sister is a vampire, is that she’s up at night when everyone else is sleeping and isn’t that what vampires do?  She even has a nasty little habit of chomping down with those canines on her brother drawing blood.  It gets so that he starts wearing garlic around his neck and one day while shopping with mom he decides to take his vampire sister and give her away. He  puts a sign on her and wheels her around the store where he finds a “vampire family” in the Halloween costume aisle.  He is ready to hand her over and she bites the other little boy who has a big reaction and it finally brings about true big brother protection.  He then understands that she is his vampire sister and like it or not he loves her and she knows she’s right where she belongs.

Ghost In The House by Ammi-Joan Paquette is a cute book of the creatures that go bump in the night.  It adds one more creature with each page turn and then a surprise ending.

Filbert, The Good Little Fiend by Hiawyn Oram  is another great book that shows a family learning to accept a son that is not such a scary fiend but loving him anyway.

Vampire Baby #Halloween #CandlwickPress

It happens overnight: “little sister Tootie goes from cuddly, ga-ga-goo-goo, I-want-my-ba-ba baby to…vampire baby.” Now she’s sinking her pointy fangs into everything — furniture, toys, and especially her big brother (“Youch, Tootie! No bite!”). Mom insists that it’s just a phase, but Tootie’s brother knows better. Just look at her hairline! Or the fact that all her favorite foods are blood red! With perfect comic timing, Kelly Bennett and Paul Meisel give a fresh slant to the new-baby story, proving that even monstrous little arrivals have a funny way of staking their siblings’ affections.

When Tootie gets her first teeth, it’s clear to her big brother that she’s no ordinary baby. But how to convince Mom and Dad?

Ghost In The House #candlewickpress

When a little ghost goes slip-sliding down the hallway, he suddenly hears…a groan! Turns out it’s only a friendly mummy, who shuffles along with the ghost, until they encounter…a monster! As the cautious explorers continue, they find a surprise at every turn — and add another adorably ghoulish friend to the count. But you’ll never guess who is the scariest creature in the house!

Boo! Watch out for this rollicking, cumulative counting book for a Halloween treat that’s more playful than scary.

Filbert, The Good Little Fiend #candlewick

Daddy and Mommy Fiend want their little Filbert to be gruesome and ghastly, but he won’t trample or terrify, roar or holler. He’d much rather help an old lady with her bags or go bird-watching. What are they to do with him? When Filbert starts school, he quickly learns that good behavior isn’t tolerated in class, and he is banished outside until he can act like a proper little fiend. Suddenly a little angel appears, flying fast and furious until…bump! Could this naughty Angel-School dropout be just the friend Filbert needs? Could they find a way together to make everyone accept them as they are?

A little fiend who’s too good for his own good befriends an angel who is too naughty — and together they concoct a clever plan.

“My Dad Thinks He’s Funny” By Katrina Germein Review & Giveaway

logo (4)

There are some great books that can help you celebrate Dad with your kids.  In anticipation of Father’s Day I will be sharing some favorites with you.  My Dad Thinks He’s Funny is a great book about a son who shares all the things his dad says and does when his dad thinks he’s funny.  Even my preschooler who is quite the jokester himself snickered as we read this, he understood all the little play on words throughout the book.  This book is a great tribute to all the funny, corny, silly dads out there and the kids that love them!

0763665223

When his son says “I’m hungry,” Dad says, “Hello, Hungry. Pleased to meet you.” Before slicing a cake for dessert, Dad announces, “There’s my piece. What’s everybody else having?” Tell Dad your foot hurts? “No problem. You’ve got another.” How is he feeling? “With my hands.” So when nothing’s up but the sky, or when jumping in the shower sounds dangerous, it may be a good time to share this book with someone who doesn’t need sugar because, well, they’re sweet enough already.

The ideal gift book for anyone whose dad makes them laugh — or roll their eyes.

“Bear In Love” by Daniel Pinkwater Review and Giveaway!!!

logo (3)

Bear in Love is such a great story for little ones especially during Valentine’s Day.  It is a very unlikely love story that is born out of kindness between a big bear and a little bunny.  It really shows that love is blind and that kindness is a beautiful thing that can be extended to another regardless of size.  It has adorable illustrations and is a heartwarming read to share with your children.

 Bear-in-Love-jacket

One morning, the bear finds something just outside his cave. It is orange and long and pointy and has bushy green leaves at one end. And it’s sweet and crunchy! Where did it come from? Then there are two more of the sweet crunchy things the next morning! The bear knows that someone nice is leaving him these treats. If only he could discover who it is! Should he leave something tasty in return? With the help of Will Hillenbrand’s endearing illustrations, the inimitable Daniel Pinkwater spins a charming little mystery about unexpected kindnesses—and finding that extra-special someone.

“A Kiss Like This” by Mary Murphy Review & Giveaway!!!

logo (3)

I cannot wait for spring and you will probably hear me mention that a dozen times at least before it arrives.  This Arctic blast we are experiencing can go back to the Arctic from which it came with bells on it!  I love looking ahead in the winter, love scheduling appointments in December for April at the doctor’s office but hate doing that in the Summer when they are scheduling for December!

Anyway, so looking ahead to the next month we have Valentine’s Day coming up and I just shared an adorable book with my little ones.  A Kiss Like This by Mary Murphy is all about how Mama and child animals express their love in a kiss.  It can be a fuzzy buzzy kiss like the bumble bees share or a fizzy bubbly kiss of the fish.  The unique way the pages are split and allow little hands to turn them and see the display of affection is so sweet.  If you are looking for a special book to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your little one, this book even saves the last kiss for you and your special Valentine.

akisslikethisbooklarge

A giraffe kiss is very tall — just turn the page and see! Elephant kisses are long, of course, while tiny mice and bubbly fish have kisses all their own. Using a clever split-page format that makes for charming surprises, author-illustrator Mary Murphy shares a series of animal kisses that are sure to have babies and toddlers gurgling, giggling, smiling, and leaning over for their kisses, too.

What better gift for a new baby? The creator of I KISSED THE BABY! celebrates animal moms and babies in an irresistible novelty book.

“Olive and the Big Secret” by Tor Freeman Review and Giveaway!!!

logo (3)

We read the most adorable book last night at bedtime.  Olive and the Big Secret by Tor Freeman is about Olive who is told a big secret by her friend Molly.  Molly tells her not to tell anyone and Olive tries very hard not to.  She comes close to telling one friend but manages not to and then it is just too much for Olive so she tells just one friend, Joe.  Joe however is even worse at keeping secrets and tells his friend Matt who just tells the first two friends he sees and one of those friends cannot wait to tell her best friend who is Molly.  The expressions on the characters match the words so perfectly and are so hysterical like when Molly hears her secret whispered in her ear.  My little guys loved this story and the illustrations.

“The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare” Hardcover Book Review & Giveaway!!!

We have been fans of Little and Big Nutbrown Hare since I can remember.  There used to be the sweetest gift store in our town that had the most beautiful selection of books and the stuffed characters then went along with them.  That was where I found the most unique Big and Little Nutbrown Hare before our son Ethan was born.

One of my childrens’ favorite books is Guess How Much I Love You, so when I received The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare by  Sam McBratney for review, I could not wait to share it with them.  They were grinning from ear to ear just seeing the cover and sat wide-eyed, with their best listening ears as I read to them the great adventures that Little Nutbrown Hare had.  Full of fun and nature Little and Big Nutbrown Hare celebrate their environment every day; playing hide and seek in a favorite tree that was knocked down in a storm, blowing dandelions on Cloudy Mountain, adventures in the Far Field and going to one of the best places of all…Home!

Candlewick Press,”Charley’s First Night” by Amy Hest Review & Giveaway!!!

You know well by now how we are a book loving family.  We received  Charley’s First Night by Amy Hest and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury recently.  The first night we read it at bedtime it was immediately asked to be read a second time and there was no argument from me.  This book shows the care and compassion that a little boy named Henry has for his new puppy named Charley.  My kids especially loved the last page of the book that shows Charley sleeping in Henry’s bed beside him with the covers pulled up to his head.  This is a sweet tale of the beginning of that special bond between a boy and his dog and my kids definitely relate as our dogs are their buddies as well.

On Charley’s first night, Henry carries his new puppy in his old baby blanket all the way to his house. He shows Charley every room, saying, “This is home, Charley.” He says that a lot so that Charley will know that he is home. Henry’s parents are very clear about who will be walking and feeding Charley (Henry will, and he can’t wait). They are also very clear about where Charley will be sleeping: Charley will be sleeping in the kitchen. But when the crying starts in the middle of the night, Henry knows right away that it’s Charley! And it looks like his parents’ idea about where Charley is going to sleep may have to change. With warmth, humor, and endearing simplicity, Amy Hest tells a tale familiar to everyone who has loved a puppy, while Helen Oxenbury renders each tender gesture and charming detail in a beauty of a book that children will be eager to take home.
